However, talks have stalled between the Lions' front office and Sims' representation. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said it's been nearly a month since he's spoken to Sims' camp.
"We've had some discussion with Rob," Mayhew said, via MLive.com. "I spoke to his agent probably about three weeks ago and we had an offer out to him. That's kind of where we are right now. We'll have to kind of wait and see what happens."
The Lions could still opt to draft a lineman early to fill the position, too.
Sims, who entered the NFL in 2006, has been with the Lions for the past five seasons.
"We've been in contact with Rob, and we've had some dialogue with him about a contract," Mayhew told local reporters at the NFL annual meetings at the Arizona Biltmore resort.
Sims came out and stated that the feeling is mutual about returning to the team.
"We would love to be back," Sims said in February, speaking about his wife. "We built a life here…. We want to be able to finish our work here that we started with this. We have businesses here. We've played good ball here.
"If (my career) stopped tomorrow, Detroit would have a huge place in my heart because of the things we've been able to do here. We would love to finish what we started."
The 31-year-old is entering his 10th season in the NFL, five of which have been with the Lions.
Free agent guard
He could supplant
"The 10 years previous of me being here there had been 16 other guards," Sims said shortly after the season ended for Detroit. "That’s enough. Me holding it down for five years, I’m proud of that."
The 31-year-old veteran is proud to call Detroit home.
"This is our home," Sims said. "My children were born here. Me and my wife have built our family here and bought businesses here. Detroit is never ever going to leave me. My heart and my charity work will always be here. But yeah, I would love to stay here, love to."
Sims is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March.
