"We’re eyes wide open on this,” Stephen Jones, the club’s executive vice president, told the paper. "I won’t be totally surprised if he starts the season on PUP. Anthony thinks he might be back. I hope he does. We came into this knowing that he could be a PUP guy."
Spencer said it's possible he'll return toward the end of training camp.
“It’s getting there,” Spencer said, via ESPN.com. “I’ve probably got another month or so. When I had the surgery, they said it was a six- to eight-month recovery. I’m in the five- to seven-month range now. I just need to continue to get it stronger and stronger."
Spencer, who's been rehabbing at the Cowboys’ facility, said his familiarity with the training and coaching staff played a role in his decision to re-sign. "They know me the best," he said. “They know when I can push it and when I need some rest."
Free agent defensive end
Spence is recovering from microfracture surgery on his knee and will not be 100 percent ready for training camp in July. He played only one game last season before having surgery. In 2012, he registered 11 sacks and made the Pro Bowl.
