Patriots, Springs agree to deal: According to numerous reports, the Patriots and CB Shawn Springs have agreed to a three-year contract that will bring the veteran defender to New England and help them shore up their defensive shortcomings from 2008. Most significantly, Springs will now continue to defend against Terrell Owens, who was signed by division-rival Buffalo. Springs and Owens have a long-standing rivalry dating back to T.O.'s days with the Eagles and Cowboys and Springs with the Redskins. Springs will almost certainly be asked to defend against Owens by himself in Bills-Patriots games this season.

Springs won't play every snap this season and will be used in a rotation with three other good corners, including Leigh Bodden, who the Patriots also signed. Consider Springs nothing more than a useful low-end DB when faced with a favorable matchup this season. He's not worth drafting.

CB Shawn Springs is clearly a student of the game. Upon his arrival in New England, Springs brought with him his black book on the NFL's elite receivers. Springs has kept notes on their tendencies and strengths, which should help as his gears up for his first season with the Patriots. "I've developed notes on all the receivers. These guys are too good to go out there and not know them," Springs said. "When I played Randy (Moss), I had a game plan against him, or whether it was Marvin Harrison, or going way back to Jimmy Smith, or Chad Johnson. That's one of the things -- I'm a big note taker." 62/5/2009
