Bears sign TE Gaines to one-year deal: Tight end Michael Gaines and the Chicago Bears agreed Monday on a one-year contract. Gaines was a seventh-round draft pick of Carolina in 2004 and has 79 catches for 810 yards and five touchdowns in his career with the Panthers, Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions. Gaines caught 23 passes for 260 yards and a TD for the Lions last season.

Gaines, who was also courted by the Jets, signed a one-year deal with a base pay of $620,000, the veteran minimum, although he could earn as much as $1.25 million with incentives. "The Bears had a plan for me. You can't beat that when people have a goal and a plan mapped out for you at your position. If you put both (the Bears and Jets) together and looked at them on paper, the Jets made sense. But like I said, the Bears had a plan for me and there was just something about Chicago." 51/4/2009
