CB Spencer a longshot to start: San Francisco cornerback Walt Harris could miss the upcoming season after tearing a ligament in his right knee during a May minicamp, dealing an early blow to the 49ers' hopes of a return to playoff contention. The 34-year-old Harris will need surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament, which is at least partially torn. Such operations typically require several months of rehabilitation. Tarell Brown probably will take Harris' place atop the 49ers' depth chart opposite fellow cornerback Nate Clements. Shawntae Spencer, a longtime starter at cornerback for San Francisco, still hasn't returned to practice after missing 14 games last season with a knee ligament injury.

Harris was a starter in the Niners secondary and will be missed if he is indeed out. Brown and Spencer are nothing more than potential one-week replacements in the deepest of IDP leagues this summer. Keep all three 49ers DBs out of draft plans.

CB Shawntae Spencer could find his way into the mix at cornerback if he can fully recover from a season-ending ACL injury he sustained in the second game of last season. Walt Harris, who started 46 games with the 49ers in three seasons, is out for the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee. Spencer has yet to return to on-field work with the 49ers. Spencer, a second-round draft pick in 2004, started 39 games in his first three seasons before losing his starting job when the club signed Clements as a free agent in 2007. 52/1/2009
