Dolphins could have interest in Vonta Leach
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

The Dolphins could have interest in free agent fullback Vonta Leach, reports ESPN. The Ravens cut Leach on Thursday in an effort to save salary.

Leach was in a similar situation last year when the Ravens cut him to save cap room. Leach was immediately invited to Miami to visit during the team's minicamp but never signed with the Dolphins. Instead, he returned to Baltimore.

The Dolphins moved on without a fullback in 2013 in their West Coast offense. Miami tried to convert tight end Michael Egnew to fullback and had mixed results. The Dolphins were 26th in rushing and struggled to consistently gain yards on the ground. Miami also set a new franchise record with 58 quarterback sacks allowed.

Ravens could bring back back Vonta Leach, Jameel McClain

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said the team would consider re-signing fullback Vonta Leach and linebacker Jameel McClain, who were released Thursday, at lower salaries. "They are our types of players," Newsome said, via the Baltimore Sun.

The team saved nearly $5 million in cap space by cutting the vets.

John Harbaugh on Vonta Leach: It wasn't working
by Marty Gitlin |

John Harbaugh has defended the diminishing reps given to Ravens fullback Vonta Leach as the season progressed. Leach averaged just 8.3 snaps in the last nine games and four in the final three games.

"Vonta's role changed when we moved the offense away from a two-back foundation early on, and the reason we moved away from that was because it wasn't working," he told the Baltimore Sun. "We started off with a two-back foundation, and we couldn't run the ball well enough to base the offense and the run game on. And I think we came to the realization, and we had to move away from it, which took Vonta off the field more."

The Ravens placed 30th in the NFL in rushing with 1,328 yards, the lowest in franchise history. Their 3.1 yards per carry average was last in the league.

Vonta Leach hoping fullback spot doesn't go out of vogue
by Marty Gitlin |

Ravens fullback Vonta Leach has seen his role as almost strictly a blocker diminish in the pass-happy NFL, but still plans on playing out his contract, which runs through 2014, and perhaps beyond.

"I'm going to sit down with [the team] over the next couple of days," he told the team website. "Obviously I wasn't in the offense a whole lot this year. A lot of factors factored into that. I still think I can play in this game. I still got a lot of good tread on my tires."

Leach added that some teams still utilize fullbacks, which gives him hope. The Ravens went more often to single-back sets as the season progressed. Leach finished the year with 11 rushes for 23 yards and 11 receptions for 47 yards and a touchdown.
