Davis fell out of favor with the Redskins last season, and is coming up on free-agency already facing an indefinite suspension as a part of his violation.
"Unfortunately, a couple of months ago I took a supplement that contained a banned substance. I now know that supplements are not regulated by the FDA and may contain banned substances. The NFL Policy is strict, and not knowing that a supplement might contain a banned substance doesn't excuse a violation of the policy."
Davis, who's entering free agency, said he'll stay in football shape and apply for reinstatement in the fall.
He was active for 10 games, catching seven passes for 70 yards.
CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported last month that Davis was facing a six-game suspension. Davis also was banned for the final four games of the 2011 season.
Davis is set to be a free-agent, and this won't help his stock. He has a history of failing drug tests, though it's unclear if that's the reason for his recent suspension. Davis lost his job to rookie Jordan Reed this season, and it was looking like he was on his way out of Washington.
Paulsen caught two passes for 7 yards. Davis caught one pass for 9 yards. Both players filled in for Jordan Reed, who was shut down for the season with a concussion. They'll take on the Giants Week 17.
