Report: Texans name QB Brian Hoyer starter for 2015
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer

According to a report from NFL.com insider Ian Rapoport, the Texans have decided to go with Brian Hoyer as their quarterback to start the 2015 campaign.

Hoyer, who signed a two-year deal with the Texans in the offseason, threw for 3,326 yards, 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions last year with the Browns. He was in a quarterback battle with Ryan Mallett for the starting job.

Hoyer was 7 of 11 for 52 yards in Houston's second preseason game against the Broncos.

O'Brien: Texans QB battle between Hoyer and Mallett still rages
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Bill O'Brien launched a quarterback derby between Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett well before training camp began for the Texans. And now he is insisting that the two are still running neck-and-neck for the starting job.

"They both have the quality of leadership; they both have the quality of intelligence," O'Brian told the team website. "So, it's an even battle. And like I said, we'll make a decision at some point. We'll go with one guy to start the season. That other guy needs to be ready to play."

Despite his insistence, O'Brien is leaning toward Hoyer, according to NFL.com, which is claiming that the coaching staff is more comfortable with him. But O'Brien will continue to give Mallett an opportunity to show what he can do.

"If I had the body of knowledge right now, I would probably make the decision," O'Brien said. "I need to see a little bit more and I want to give Ryan a chance to start a game, and put some more thought into it."

Mallett completed 10 of 11 passes for 90 yards and no scores in the first preseason game against San Francisco. Hoyer hit on 2 of 4 for 67 yards and a 58-yard touchdown to Cecil Shorts.

Texans QB Brian Hoyer tosses 58-yard TD in team debut

Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer threw a 58-yard touchdown to Cecil Shorts in the opening drive of Saturday's preseason game against the 49ers.

Hoyer, who played just one drive, finished the game 2 for 4 for 67 yards.

''It was more just a new fresh start for me and you want to go out and put your best foot forward, so I think it was just that for me,'' Hoyer said.

Hoyer is battling with Ryan Mallett for the starting quarterback spot. Mallet finished the game 10 for 11 for 90 yards.

The notion that one of the candidates for the starting quarterback job with the Texans would play himself out of the running this early has turned out to be a little far-fetched.

Both Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett have impressed Bill O'Brien, who is now hedging on his earlier claim that he might name a starter soon. He might be forced to wait beyond the beginning of training camp.

"These two guys are competing really well; they're very bright guys," O'Brien told the team website. "I think they've both had really good springs. ... [The starter] might be named next week. He might be named after the Redskins three days of practice. It might be after the San Francisco preseason game."

Without pads or contact drills, the evaluation process at quarterback is more difficult. O'Brien must rely on other qualities, such as grasping concepts at meetings, practice performance, leadership qualities, picking up the offense and decision-making. So far, it appears to be a dead-heat.

"I don't think there's a situation here where one guy has just been that much better on any given day than the other guy," O'Brien said. "They both practice very well. These guys command at the line of scrimmage. Both these guys know how to run an offensive huddle in pro football. They're leaders, so I think it's helped our team."

Texans may decide starting quarterback before training camp
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com

With Texans quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett competing for the starting role, coach Bill O'Brien said Thursday he may decide on his starting quarterback before training camp begins, reports NFL.com.

"That decision may be made before training camp," O'Brien said. "They're out here competing [in OTAs and at mandatory minicamp] every single day, and it's pretty intense. So, we may pick a guy very soon. And if we don't, and the decision does go into training camp, it'll be made pretty early on. The team needs to know who the guy is, and we need to go forward."
