Hoyer looked poised leading the first-team offense during OTAs, in part because of his previous time spent in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense, reports. "It's definitely easier for me to call the plays this time around," the veteran quarterback noted. "I remember last time kind of having to think about it, whereas now I find myself knowing that when Kyle starts to call a play I can kind of put it together. ...It comes naturally to me."
Hoyer spent two seasons with Shanahan in Cleveland during the 2014 season, where Shanahan was the offensive coordinator. Hoyer started 13 games that season, registering 3,326 passing yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Now the two reunite in San Francisco after gaining valuable experience over the past two seasons on different teams. Since Hoyer has the base of the offense already down, the veteran quarterback could be in store for a productive fantasy season, especially given Shanahan's quarterback-friendly offensive schemes.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan stated that Hoyer is still the team's starting quarterback despite taking C.J. Beathard in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Beathard was considered a developmental draft selection, so Hoyer's starting job is in no danger and Shanahan confirmed that sentiment Friday. The journeyman quarterback has shown flashes of fantasy usefulness over the past few seasons, but injuries have always cut the 32-year-old's seasons short. Health and inconsistent results will keep veteran's value depressed heading into drafts next season, but there is some potential for a career year under Shanahan, who Hoyer threw for a career-high 3,326 yards in 2014 when both were with the Browns.
Entering free agency without a QB on the roster, the 49ers quickly filled one of the spots with Hoyer during the two-day window to contact unrestricted free agents. The destination could be kind to Hoyer, who previously put together his only 3,000-yard season under the watchful eye of then Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in 2014. Hoyer will also have a handful of interesting receivers, namely free-agent pickups Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin, plus holdovers Jeremy Kerley and Vance McDonald (shoulder).
Hoyer fared well in his stint as the Bears' starting quarterback last season, cobbling together four consecutive 300-yard performances before breaking his left forearm in Week 7. As he heads to San Francisco, he'll reunite with new head coach Kyle Shanahan, who served as the Browns' offensive coordinator during the sole 3,000-yard campaign of Hoyer's career in 2014. With running back Carlos Hyde (knee), wideout Jeremy Kerley, and Vance McDonald (shoulder) already in place -- and Pierre Garcon about to join the party -- Hoyer will have an opportunity to post respectable numbers with the eighth organization of his career.
Hoyer (forearm) is "all set" to return to football-related activities, Crain's Cleveland reports.
Hoyer ended the 2016 campaign on injured reserve due to a broken left forearm suffered in Week 7 against the Packers. Now roughly three months removed from corrective surgery, he stated he's received clearance from his doctor to resume football activities, a fortunate development for the quarterback who's set to hit unrestricted free agency.
