Timmons and the Steelers are not expected to agree on a contract extension prior to kickoff on Monday, meaning he's slated to become a free agent following the 2016 season, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Once the season begins, the Steelers are known to shut down all contract negotiations, so it appears Timmons will head to free agency following the season. Obviously that doesn't rule out Timmons from re-signing with the Steelers once the offseason is here, but it's at least notable that he'll have the option to explore other choices. Timmons has spent his entire 10-year career with the Steelers and hasn't missed a start in each of his last five seasons. He's coming off a 2015 campaign where he compiled 119 tackles, five sacks, one interception and one forced fumble and should remain one of the team's defensive leaders.
Lawrence Timmons totaled six tackles (five solo) against Denver on Sunday.
Timmons had a team high 119 tackles (77 solo), including five sacks, an interception and a forced fumble in 2015. Timmons led the resurgence of the Pittsburgh Steelers ' defense, which finished third in the league with 48 sacks, matching their total from 2010 when they last made it to the Super Bowl. Timmons, who turns 30 this off season, extended his streak of consecutive regular season games played to 104, which is the fourth longest active consecutive games played streak among NFL linebackers. He should continue to be worthy of fantasy consideration in IDP leagues in 2016.
Lawrence Timmons recorded a team-high 10 tackles (seven solo), including 1.5 sacks in the Pittsburgh Steelers ' win over the Browns on Sunday.
When Pittsburgh needed him most, Timmons had a monster game, including the first time since 2012 that he had more than one sack in a game.
Timmons has a team-high 110 tackles this season, 30 more than the next closest defender (Ryan Shazier). He'll look to add to that total in Week 17 against a Cleveland offense he beat for 10 tackles, including a sack, earlier this season. Timmons also looks to extended his streak of consecutive regular-season games started, currently at 84, which is the longest active streak among current Steelers and the third-longest active streak among NFL linebackers.
Lawrence Timmons totaled six tackles (four solo) including a sack in the Pittsburgh Steelers win over the Broncos on Sunday.
The veteran linebacker has been a tackling machine all season (102), but had struggled to get to opposing quarterbacks until recently, recording sacks in each of his last two games. After compiling a season-high 11 tackles including a sack against Baltimore earlier his season, Timmons will have an opportunity to add to his totals against the Ravens and journeyman quarterback Jimmy Clausen in Week 15.
