QB Smith not backing down from Hill: The San Francisco Chronicle had an offseason minicamp wrap-up feature that highlighted Alex Smith's progression from unmotivated backup to potential starter. Smith reportedly dazzled in the club's final minicamp, throwing accurately and leading several scoring drives in red-zone drills while Shaun Hill, the incumbent, didn't fare as well. The paper also noted that Hill has long been a slow learner, even in weeks during the season when he'd look awful on Wednesday, tune up by Friday and play well on Sunday (he's 7-3 as a starter). It all adds up to a training camp battle that head coach Mike Singletary previously called a "great competition."

Fantasy Analysis

With all the news and hub-bub we've delivered this spring, we still feel like this is Hill's job to lose. But with so much up in the air, Hill can't be trusted as anything more than a sleeper for 2009. He'll be worth a late-round draft pick this summer as a No. 2 Fantasy QB -- and that's assuming he is the starter. Smith isn't even worth a draft pick at this point -- let him prove to you that he's capable of starting for the Niners first before giving him the nod with a valuable draft choice. Let's not forget one thing: Frank Gore is the heart and soul of this offense, and that means whomever wins the QB job won't be in line for a glut of stats so long as Gore is healthy.

QB Alex Smith was said to be in competition with Shaun Hill for the 49ers' starting job last summer. That was before offensive coordinator Mike Martz elevated J.T. O'Sullivan into the battle. O'Sullivan eventually won the job for the start of the regular season. While the quarterbacks were kept in the dark during that process, Smith said this year the competition has a different feel to it. "The attitude from coach (Mike) Singletary all the way down, it's far different," Smith said. "Last year was ... I don't' want to say more lax, but it was a little bit. Everything is on the table right now. Coach Singletary doesn't hold anything back with us, so it's all out there. He's going to tell you what he thinks and what he wants. He'll tell you to your face and look you in the eye. Last year it was, ???Hey, what's going on?' This year, it's nothing close to that." 72//2009
