Alex Smith hopeful of new deal
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, who has one year left on his contract, wants to sign an extension and continue his career in Kansas City, reports the Kansas City Star.

"I'd love to have it done," Smith said. "I love Kansas City, I love the coaching staff, the players. … But when you're talking about this many years and that type of deal, you want it done right. You want both sides happy, and you want it to be something that is going to last and you can play out. A lot of things go into it. With that, there's still plenty of time. I still have a whole year left. And who knows what will happen?"

Smith said his representatives had discussions with Chiefs general manager John Dorsey until this month, when the league goes dormant before camp. Smith is due $7.5 million this year if he doesn't sign an extension.

Smith, acquired from San Francisco in a March 2013 trade, was 11-4 as a starter for the Chiefs last season and led the team to the playoffs a year after they went 2-14, tied for the worst record in the league. He is 30-9-1 as a starter in the last three seasons, having led San Francisco to the NFC championship game in 2011 and helping the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2012 before coming to Kansas City, where he established career bests with 308 completions, 508 attempts, 3,313 yards and 23 touchdowns with just seven interceptions.

Alex Smith benefits with experience in system
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said quarterback Alex Smith will benefit with another year in his offensive system heading into 2014.

Smith played his first year for Reid in Kansas City in 2013 and passed for 3,313 yards, 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 61 percent completions, and he added 431 rushing yards and one touchdown.

"I think it’s two things: I think he's more familiar with all of his receivers, Dwayne (Bowe) included, and he's more familiar with the offense," Reid said Thursday. "They all are. So, you hope that that's the next step that takes place there, where they can all pick their game up even a little bit better than they were last year."

Andy Reid confident Chiefs will re-sign Alex Smith
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday on NFL Network that he's confident the team will re-sign quarterback Alex Smith

"[T]here's been open communication," Reid said. "I've always believed that if there's open communication, then normally good things happen. So, I'm sure something will get done. I can't put a time frame on that, but I'm sure something will get done."

Chiefs draft Aaron Murray
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

With pick No. 163 in the NFL Draft, the Chiefs selected quarterback Aaron Murray from Georgia. Murray is expected to challenge Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray to be the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Alex Smith.

Murray will likely sit for at least a year since Smith is entering the final season of his contract, although don't be suprised if Smith still gets a contract extension in Kansas City. Either way, don't expect Murray to start any time soon barring injury.

Murray finished his career at Georgia by passing for 3,075 yards, 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 11 starts in 2013 before suffering a torn ACL in his left knee against Kentucky. He is the only quarterback in SEC history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in all four seasons and is the conference's career record holder in touchdowns (121) and passing yards (13,166).

His status for the start of training camp is questionable with his knee.
