Murphy (torn ACL) will start training camp on the Active/PUP list, Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune reports.
Bouncing back from an ACL tear suffered in October, Murphy was previously expected to be ready for the start of training camp. He served as the team's No. 3 wideout prior to last year's injury, but even if he gets healthy soon, there's no shortage of competition for the job.
Murphy's experience and size could be key in his battle for the slot receiver role in training camp, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.
The veteran receiver is expected to be ready to practice at the onset of training camp following his October 2015 ACL tear, and will jump into the midst of what should be the most hotly-contested position on the Bucs offense this summer. Murphy has played in the slot at various points in his career, with his most extensive tenure at that spot coming in 2012 with the Panthers. However, his 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame, normally a plus for receivers, may not be ideal for playing inside, and the Bucs could instead opt for the shiftiness that an Adam Humprhies or Donteea Dye would bring. The 29-year-old Murphy will need to hit the ground running come camp, considering the cast of thousands vying for the third receiver job.
The veteran wideout will enter his eighth season with a host of young hopefuls vying for his third receiver role. Murphy hauled in 10 receptions for 198 yards in 2015-- good for a career-high 19.8 yards per catch-- before a torn ACL ended his campaign in Week 6. He displayed some chemistry downfield with rookie quarterback Jameis Winston, recording receptions of 33 and 54 yards. With the Bucs reportedly looking to have their third pass-catcher also play on the outside from time to time in 2016, players like sophomores Donteaa Dye, Evan Spencer, and Kenny Bell could all make strong bids for the job with their speed.
Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter said
Murphy tore his ACL in late October, finishing the 2015 season with a 10-198-0 receiving line in six games. Though he mostly served as Tampa Bay's No. 3 wide receiver prior to the injury, Murphy may have to compete for a roster spot in training camp - if he's even healthy enough to suit up. With 33-year-old Vincent Jackson entering the final year of his contract, the Bucs could target a wide receiver in the early rounds of the draft.
The veteran receiver's two seasons in Tampa have been cut short by injury, with an ankle ailment curtailing Murphy's 2014 campaign after 11 games. The 28-year-old was a reasonably effective third receiver early this past season, and was just beginning to develop a rapport with rookie quarterback Jameis Winston when he suffered his season-ending ACL tear in Week 6 against the Redskins. Six of his 10 catches went for first downs, and he also tallied receptions of 33 and 54 yards, which helped Murphy post a career-high 19.8 yards per catch in 2015. Under Tampa's control through the 2016 season, the eight-year pro could potentially begin training camp on the sidelines while he completes his recovery. In the event that teammate Vincent Jackson is jettisoned in the offseason by the Bucs' new coaching staff, Murphy could find himself with some added opportunities in the 2016 campaign in a new offensive system.
