Feb. 09, 2012 1:11 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: SS -- Church SS Barry Church: B-minus. A shoulder injury cut his season short, but not before he was impressive on both special teams and sub-packages. Assuming the Cowboys don’t re-sign Abram Elam or draft a safety in the first round, Church should get a legitimate chance to start in 2012. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 09, 2012 1:10 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: CB -- Walker CB Frank Walker: C. Signed off the street in Week 2 to help a depleted secondary, Walker performed much better than anyone could’ve thought. He was a solid player in nickel and dime packages, and he even turned into a locker-room favorite among his teammates. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 09, 2012 1:07 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: SS -- McCray SS Danny McCray: B-minus. Easily this team’s best special teams player and has been for two years. He’s also turning out to be a solid player in sub-packages, having played as a hybrid LB in nickel situations. He’ll likely never start on defense but he’s one of the team’s more valuable commodities. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 09, 2012 1:05 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: CB -- Ball CB Alan Ball: C-plus. His versatility paid off, as he played CB on the inside and outside, and even helped at safety at times. His special teams experience makes him a valuable backup. Ball had some nice games, filling in for Jenkins and Scandrick, but he also showed he likely won’t be a starter, at least not in Dallas. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 09, 2012 1:00 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: CB -- Scandrick CB Orlando Scandrick: C-plus. When you sign a five-year, $27 million deal before the season, expectations are raised. With that, Scandrick had a decent year, despite playing a tough position as the slot corner. Even with Newman not expected back, Scandrick’s role as the No. 3 CB seems to be set. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 09, 2012 12:56 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: FS -- Sensabaugh FS Gerald Sensabaugh: B-minus. He signed a one-year deal but played rather well for most of the year. Like all of the defensive players, Sensabaugh had his not-so-great moments, but he did enough to land a five-year, $22.5 million contract, which keeps him in the fold for a while. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 09, 2012 12:49 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: SS -- Elam SS Abram Elam: C-plus. His experience in Rob Ryan’s defensive scheme helped out early on. Elam didn’t have a spectacular year but was overall solid, playing on just a one-year deal. Owner/GM Jerry Jones didn’t sound confident Elam would return for 2012 but added “it could happen.” Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 09, 2012 12:47 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: CB -- Jenkins CB Mike Jenkins: B. Considering he wasn’t 100 percent healthy for any part of training camp or the regular season, Jenkins played rather well and toughed it out each week. At least four different injuries, most notably a lingering shoulder (which needed offseason surgery) and a sprained knee, hampered him all year. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 09, 2012 12:43 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: CB -- Newman CB Terence Newman: C-minus. It started off rocky with a groin injury that kept him out the first two games, then Newman rallied to play solid, getting four picks in the middle of the year. But he struggled at the end, seemingly losing his confidence in the season finale against NYG. As a UFA, he’s likely played his final snap with Dallas. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 07, 2012 3:01 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - McBriar undergoes foot surgery P Mat McBriar underwent surgery on his left leg/foot Tuesday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., to remove a cyst that was believed to be the major cause of his nerve damage that plagued him for most of last season. His wife, Erin, tweeted “Mat’s surgery was a success and they expect him to make a full recovery!!” Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 07, 2012 12:41 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: LB Albright LB Alex Albright: B-minus. Based off expectations, Albright wasn’t even pegged to make the squad as an undrafted rookie trying to make the switch from college DE to OLB. But Albright showed enough in the preseason to make the squad and then excelled during the year on special teams. ST coach Joe DeCamillis called Albright one of three best ST players in 2011. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 07, 2012 12:36 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: LB Carter LB Bruce Carter: C. It wasn't exactly a redshirt year for the rookie LB, but Carter only played in 10 games. That was due mostly on special teams because of a torn ACL injury he recovered from during his senior season at UNC in 2010. Carter is expected to take over the reins at MLB next to Sean Lee. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 07, 2012 12:34 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: LB Butler LB Victor Butler: C-plus. He doesn’t get many opportunities, but Butler must be given credit for taking advantage of them. Used as a rotation player on passing downs, Butler did get three sacks in 2011 and nine QB pressures. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 07, 2012 12:32 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: LB Brooking LB Keith Brooking: C-minus. Splitting reps with Bradie James and playing behind Sean Lee, Brooking wasn’t a major factor in the defense but did finish fifth in tackles with 72. While he says he doesn’t plan on retiring, Brooking is a free agent and turned 36 this past November. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 07, 2012 12:31 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: LB James LB Bradie James: D. After leading the team in tackles for six straight years, James hit the proverbial wall in 2011, finishing with just 53 stops (ninth on the defense). His playing time was cut considerably thanks to the emergence of Sean Lee and splitting time with Keith Brooking. Being an unrestricted free agent, James has likely played his last down with the Cowboys. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 07, 2012 12:27 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: LB Spencer LB Anthony Spencer: C-plus. Being a first-round pick in 2007 and playing opposite DeMarcus Ware, Spencer will likely never live up to expectations. His six sacks in 2011 weren’t that impressive but he does play the run well, finishing four on defense with 74 stops and had 31 QB hurries, compared to 40 by Ware. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 07, 2012 12:24 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: LB Lee LB Sean Lee: A. He was named a starter minutes before the season opener and Lee never looked back, enjoying one of the better seasons by a Cowboys ILB. His 131 tackles are 51 more than the second-best tackler (Gerald Sensabaugh 79). Lee also tied for the team lead in interceptions (four) and tackles for loss (eight). Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 07, 2012 12:22 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades: LB Ware LB DeMarcus Ware: A-minus. Ware just missed becoming the first player in NFL history to record two 20-sack seasons in a career. His 19.5 sacks in 2011 ranked second behind Minnesota’s Jared Allen (22). But even with gaudy sack numbers, Ware wasn’t always the dominating force the Cowboys needed. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 06, 2012 12:19 p.m. - by Nick Eatman - Last 5 Super Bowl winners went through Dallas The Cowboys have now faced the eventual Super Bowl winner in the regular season of that season five straight years with a combined eight meetings. The Cowboys are 4-4 in games played against the eventual Super Bowl winner, including an 0-2 record against the NY Giants this year. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 02, 2012 11:25 a.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades -- DT Lissemore DT Sean Lissemore : B-minus. Here’s a guy who just takes advantage of his limited opportunities. While Lissemore hasn’t been projected to be a starter, he made plays when he was in the game, with 39 tackles and two sacks, which is only three tackles fewer and equal the sacks of Pro Bowler Jay Ratliff. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 02, 2012 11:23 a.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades -- DT Brent DT Josh Brent: C-minus. This was supposed to be a breakout year for Brent, but injuries affected his playing time, particularly late in the season. He’s the only true nose tackle on the team, therefore his services are needed in goal-line situations. He was mainly a non-factor in the last eight games. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 02, 2012 11:17 a.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades -- DE Hatcher DE Jason Hatcher: B-minus. When healthy, Hatcher had some of the better moments of his six-year career. While it was somewhat surprising the club re-signed him at all, Hatcher was productive as a pass rusher, registering a career-high 4.5 sacks. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 02, 2012 11:11 a.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades -- DE Coleman DE Kenyon Coleman: C. Added in training camp because of his experience in DC Rob Ryan’s scheme, Coleman eventually jumped into the starting lineup and allowed the Cowboys to release starter Igor Olshansky. But Coleman wasn’t overly productive, which was to be expected. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 02, 2012 11:09 a.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades -- DT Ratliff DT Jay Ratliff: B-plus. While it was another Pro Bowl season for Ratliff, his numbers continue to drop from a couple of seasons ago. This year, Ratliff had just two sacks and six tackles for loss. Once again, there is talk about moving him to DE, if and only if an upgrade arrives at DT. Cowboys RapidReports
Feb. 02, 2012 11:07 a.m. - by Nick Eatman - 2011 Cowboys position grades -- DE Spears DE Marcus Spears: C. It was just another average year for Spears, who doesn’t normally put up big numbers mainly because of his role in the scheme and this year was no exception. The Cowboys weren’t exceptionally good against the run, but Spears had his moments of nice plays, just not enough. Cowboys RapidReports
