The Chargers have lost two reserve OLBs to season-ending injuries, leaving James Holt as their No. 4 OLB. Holt, an undrafted rookie from Kansas, is more experienced at the inside spots. "He's pretty good," Norv Turner said. "James has done a nice job. He's an intelligent guy."
Asked how many rushing yards the Chargers will pile up Sunday in Denver, left tackle Marcus McNeill smiled and began to talk. Then, he clammed his lips shut, still smiling. The no comment is McNeill's first of the year.
The Chargers may give blocking and scheme help to RT Brandyn Dombrowski if starter Jeromey Clary is unable to play at Denver. Norv Turner said Dombrowski "really never played right tackle, so we'll have to manage that extremely well."
WR Vincent Jackson drew double coverage for some 30 snaps on Sunday, leading to a strong game for RB LaDainian Tomlinson. He said the Chargers will be ready to do the same thing to the Broncos. "If I'm getting a safety over the top, we should be able to run the ball well."
In a Sports Illustrated poll of NFL players, the Chargers ranked second among potential employers. "Beaches and pretty girls everywhere, why wouldn't you want to be here?" LT Marcus McNeill told RapidReports. WR Vincent Jackson cited warm weather. And Bolts aura. "We have a nice aura about us. There's a nice aura in San Diego."
Philip Rivers has big career numbers against the Broncos. Noting changes in coaches and players, Norv Turner said Rivers will face a "real different group" in Denver on Sunday.
Would LeBron James succeed in the NFL? "He'd be like a tight end -- an athletic tight end to go up and make plays," Chargers TE Antonio Gates said. "Blocking is something you can learn." James was an all-state WR in high school. Gates was a 225-pound speed tight end in a wishbone offense before going to Kent State to play hoops.
LeBron James said he could be "really good" at football, and the Browns said they'd be interested in James. Chargers TE Antonio Gates was a basketball player at Kent State before returning to football. "I don't think it would ever happen," he said of James joining the NFL. "But it would be similar to my situation."
Norv Turner said RT Jeromey Clary was limited today by an ankle injury. Turner said he'll decide on Sunday if Clary will play against the Broncos.
The Broncos will hurt their running game if they try to slow Chargers pass-rushers like the Eagles did. One of defensive coordinator Ron Rivera's pals on Philly's staff told him: "Your outside rushers were not going to get a sack. We were going to chip, and we were going to double, and we weren't going to let people get to the quarterback."
Chargers injury report -- Out: C Nick Hardwick; Questionable: RT Jeromey Clary and DE-NT Ogemdi Nwagbuo.
Chargers ILB Tim Dobbins missed the last two games because of a knee sprain. Dobbins, who's wearing a brace, took part in every practice this week and appears set to return on Sunday against the Broncos. Coordinator Ron Rivera said he'll likely rotate four inside linebackers.
OLB Shawne Merriman isn't wearing a knee brace and appears to be running with fresh legs today at Chargers Park. Coming off an unusually taxing game, he sat out Wednesday's practice because of foot soreness.
C Nick Hardwick sometimes attends practice even when he can't take part. But Hardwick wasn't at the first part of today's practice. He hasn't practiced since suffering a setback last week in his comeback from ankle surgery.
RT Jeromey Clary is taking part in today's light practice. He hadn't practiced since leaving Sunday's game because of an ankle injury.
If Chris Simms plays Sunday, he'll be the first left-handed QB faced by the Bolts, with the exception of Michael Vick, who threw one incomplete pass against them in Sunday's game. That could make right DE Jacques Cesaire's job more exciting. "Your actions have to go to the defense's right and the QB's left," coordinator Ron Rivera said.
Rapid Reports told Chargers coordinator Ron Rivera that Broncos QB Chris Simms looked awful last week. "He hadn't played in awhile," Rivera replied. "He probably didn't get a lot of practice reps, so I'm not buying into it. This is a guy that had a lot success in this league. We're preparing for a very efficient football player."
Jacob Hester said the Chargers are more apt to contain Broncos return man Eddie Royal than they were on Oct. 19, when Royal ran back a kick and a punt for a TD. "We've come together," said Hester, who's on both coverage units. He praised rookie James Holt, who won a game ball after making four tackles against the Eagles last Sunday.

Lt is getting his reps and is finding his quickness again.  He isn't worn down from a lot of reps early in the season.  He may be primed for a very strong second half of the season.

As I said earlier in the year when the "pessimistic" Bolts fans were giving up on the division, I fully expected Denver to come back to reality.  They never seemed like a true 6-0 team.  Losing to the Deadskins sort of proved t ...(more)
