Mock Draft: Charley Casserly
CBS Sports analyst Charley Casserly predicts the first round of the NFL Draft.
| 2007 NFL Mock Draft |
| 1. Oakland Raiders | ||
JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU -- They regret not taking Leinart last year so they make up for it by taking a QB. Russell fits the mold of a classic old time Raider QB, a big strong armed QB who can get the ball deep.
| 2. Detroit Lions | ||
Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson -- They want to move out of this pick to pick a defensive player, but we will keep them here for now. Adams is the best defensive fit for them. It gives them an impact pass rusher.
| 3. Cleveland Browns | ||
Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame -- Adrian Peterson and Joe Thomas are better players but the organization decides it needs to get a QB. This does give them a QB and the native hero would buy the team some time with fans as they continue to rebuild.
| 4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers | ||
Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech -- Tampa decides not to trade up knowing they will get a good player here and they do. Calvin Johnson is the best player in the draft.
| 5. Arizona Cardinals | ||
Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin -- Matt Leinart is leading the cheering section as they give him help in the offensive line. Adrian Peterson is considered but after the money given to Edgerrin James last year, they decide to pick Thomas and not have too much at the RB position.
| 6. Washington Redskins | ||
LaRon Landry, S, LSU -- They consider Amobi Okoye because of the need but decide Landry is a safer pick.
| 7. Minnesota Vikings | ||
Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma -- Not necessarily a slam dunk here because it is not their biggest need, but he is just too good to pass up for a team that needs to add some explosive offensive weapons.
| 8. Atlanta Falcons | ||
Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas -- I have to believe the Falcons are going to try very hard to trade with Detroit to get local hero Calvin Johnson, but we will leave them here for now. It is a discussion between an OT (Levi Brown) and a defensive end. Their greatest need is defensive end so I gave them Jamaal Anderson.
| 9. Miami Dolphins | ||
Levi Brown, OT, Penn State -- The offensive line needs a remake and with Levi Brown they get a physical mauler type of run blocker they lack, Okoye and a CB will be discussed.
| 10. Houston Texans | ||
Patrick Willis, LB, Mississippi -- They are talking to Denver as I write this pick. If Denver gets the pick it will be a defensive player, probably either Patrick Willis or the best defensive lineman, but I would give them Willis here. We will talk about Houston in Denver's slot.
| 11. San Francisco 49ers | ||
Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska -- Their biggest need is defensive line, especially at DE. Carriker fits the 3-4 perfectly and they can get a receiver in the second round.
| 12. Buffalo Bills | ||
Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh -- With Willis gone they take a replacement for Clements. Why Revis over Hall? Most people I talked had it rated that way and I liked Revis' upside over Hall. They need a RB but there are better RBs in the second and third rounds than there are CBs.
| 13. St. Louis Rams | ||
Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville -- The trade for Donte Hall eliminates the Ted Ginn discussion, if there was ever going to be one. They will discuss Okoye and Alan Branch. I put Okoye here because those who do not want Branch will point to some of his similarities to Jimmy Kennedy who has struggled since being taken by St. Louis. Okoye's best asset is his high motor which Branch does not show all the time (Kennedy's problem, too).
| 14. Carolina Panthers | ||
Reggie Nelson, S, Florida -- They could go a few different ways with this pick; MLB (Dan Morgan' health issues), TE (need) or future needs at positions such as WR or DL. But with longtime stalwart Mike Minter retiring after this year, they pick Reggie Nelson.
| 15. Pittsburgh Steelers | ||
Leon Hall, CB, Michigan -- They have a need at LB, but they also have one at CB.
| 16. Green Bay Packers | ||
Marshawn Lynch, RB, California -- They have a need and with his receiving ability he is a good fit for the Green Bay offense.
| 17. Jacksonville Jaguars | ||
Michael Griffin, S, Texas -- The Jaguars usually pick for need in the first round, and with the loss of Deon Grant, safety has become a need.
| 18. Cincinnati Bengals | ||
Alan Branch, DT, Michigan -- Their top need is DB but so is a big DT, and Branch is probably rated higher than any of the DBs, at this point.
| 19. Tennessee Titans | ||
Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC -- They need CB, RB and WR. The head coach and offensive coordinator have USC ties so I will play a hunch and take Jarrett over most people's No. 2-rated receiver and mine, Robert Meachem.
| 20. New York Giants | ||
Jon Beason, LB, Miami -- Their top two needs are CB and OT but the higher-rated player is Jon Beason, so they stay disciplined and take the best player.
| 21. Denver Broncos | ||
Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan -- Denver wants an impact defensive player and realizes that there will not be one there at No. 21, so that is why they want to trade with Houston. Houston wants to get a left OT (because they are unsure of Charles Spencer's return from his broken leg of last year) and pick up an extra draft pick or two. Many people have Staley as the third OT, but Tony Ugoh is making a late run to get in the first round, with five visits last week.
| 22. Dallas Cowboys | ||
Robert Meachem, WR, Tennessee -- They need depth at DB and LB, but they have age at the starting WR position. Meachem or another WR makes sense here. Most people and myself had Meachem as the No. 2 WR.
| 23. Kansas City Chiefs | ||
Ted Ginn, R/RS, Ohio State -- They have a need at DT. Justin Harrell is a player people begin to like in this area, but with the trade of Hall there is an opening, and Ted Ginn could quickly evoke memories of Dante Hall on opening day.
| 24. New England Patriots (from Seattle) | ||
Brandon Meriweather, FS, Miami -- With two picks this close together I would not be surprised if New England looks to trade down, believing they can still get they same quality player at the top of the second round as they can get here. We will leave them here for now though.
| 25. N.Y. Jets | ||
Ben Grubbs, OG, Auburn -- Most people have them picking Greg Olsen here. I will play a hunch here and give them Grubbs. It is a need and he will go late first to early second, so they are picking value.
| 26. Philadelphia Eagles | ||
Aaron Ross, CB, Texas -- They need a safety but there isn't any who fits the value of the pick. Ross fills a need at CB and in the return game.
| 27. New Orleans Saints | ||
Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas -- They will look at Eric Wright at CB but may not want to answer the questions about his past in their first draft press conference. Justin Harrell is a better player at his position but they draft for need and take Chris Houston.
| 28. New England Patriots | ||
David Harris, LB, Michigan -- They may still trade out of here but I think they will keep one of these picks. They need an inside LB and Harris is a better fit in the 3-4 defense and faster than Paul Posluszny of Penn State.
| 29. Baltimore Ravens | ||
Tony Ugoh, T, Arkansas -- They like to pick for value but with Ogden's future in question, at least a year from now, and the loss of Pashos to Jacksonville, they opt for need and take the next best OT in Ugoh. If Houston were to take Ugoh they would be very happy to get Staley.
| 30. San Diego Chargers | ||
Craig Davis, WR, LSU -- They need a safety but the better ones are taken. The selection of Davis over his teammate might surprise some, but I will play a hunch and say they go for the faster man.
| 31. Chicago Bears | ||
Lawrence Timmons, LB, Florida State -- They are doing cartwheels in the draft room as Timmons slips to them. I say they take him over other needs at DT (Justin Harrell) or OL (Justin Blaylock).
| 32. Indianapolis Colts | ||
Justin Harrell, DT, Tennessee -- Indy will take the best player over need. If you don't think so, go back to Reggie Wayne. That was an example of taking the best player over need, but if they can get Justin Harrell, it will give them value as well as fill a need.
