Detroit concludes draft by making 'Bama's Robinson Mr. Irrelevant

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Alabama cornerback Ramzee Robinson is the newest Mr. Irrelevant.

Eighteen hours and five minutes after it began, the Detroit Lions ended the NFL draft Sunday by selecting the 5-foot-10, 186-pound cornerback in the seventh round with the 255th.

"My faith was tested," Robinson said during a conference call with the Detroit media. "Thankfully it held up and made me a Detroit Lion.

"I'm just thankful my name was finally called."

Robinson was a three-year starter for the Crimson Tide and had four career interceptions.

The perks of being perhaps the draft's longest of long shots includes a June trip to Newport Beach, Calif., as the guest of honor at the Lowsman Trophy banquet. The Lowsman Trophy is Irrelevant Week's answer to the Heisman Trophy.

Robinson said he plans to take part in the festivities.

"It's a tradition," he said. "I'm pretty sure I'm going to learn a lot about it in the next week or so."

Kevin McMahan, last season's Mr. Irrelevant, was drafted and then cut by Oakland. The wide receiver from Maine signed with Indianapolis after the Colts won the Super Bowl in February.
