Week 1 Judgements: After dismal performances, why wait to make QB changes?

By | CBSSports.com Senior Writer

1. Tony Romo averages 23 yards a completion, and I'm not sure if he's that good or the Giants' pass defense is that atrocious. What I do know is the time is right to talk long-term contract again.

2. One down, one to go. After Charlie Frye's performance, Cleveland might move Brady Quinn on to the Vince Young schedule of a year ago. The Titans were going to wait on Young, but grew sick of seeing Kerry Collins lose. So they made a move four games into the season. The Browns were going to wait on Quinn, too, but what's the point? If Sunday is an indication, it will be a long season. So find out what he has. You have nothing to lose but another ballgame.

3. No, Kansas City, that was not an aberration. There just aren't many points in that offense. Which is why you're going to see Brodie Croyle before long.

4. Memo to Buffalo offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild: Next time you have a third-and-5 with fewer than three minutes left, give the ball to Marshawn Lynch. Please. Instead of sticking with Lynch, Fairchild dialed Lee Evans with a bomb. Maybe it works against another opponent. Not here. Evans had two catches for 5 yards, a testament to Champ Bailey and Dre' Bly.

5. Let's get this out of the way right now: If New England makes it back to the Super Bowl, Al Davis gets a full share and a ring.

6. People keep telling me Baltimore will add free-agent quarterback Byron Leftwich, and it makes sense. The feeling is the Ravens will sign him to a two-year deal, then sift through Steve McNair, Leftwich and Kyle Boller a year from now for a starter.

7. Listen, at this point it doesn’t matter when JaMarcus Russell signs with Oakland. This season is down the tubes for the guy, so the Raiders shouldn't be in a rush to do anything. They'll sign him, but why worry about the guy now when he won't have an impact on your season?

8. Maybe, just maybe, someone should start defending the LaDainian Tomlinson option pass. All the guy has done in his career is try 11 of them, completing eight for 144 yards and seven touchdowns. His passer rating? Try 154.4.

9. Sooner or later, Pete Prisco will admit it: Vince Young is an ironclad winner. All I know is he won nine of his past 12 starts with a supporting cast that flunked the audition for Friday Night Lights.

10. Mark it down, Houston fans: One week into the season, Mario Williams leads Reggie Bush in scoring.

11. I'll say this about Miami's Cam Cameron: The man has guts. Four seconds left in the half, and he has the ball at the Washington 1. He kicks the field goal to tie the game, right? Wrong. He scores a touchdown. I like that.

12. I knew Joey Harrington was good for at least one touchdown pass. But two? Man, I love that Harrington-to-Antoine Winfield combination.

13. Something tells me we're going to see Kellen Clemens sooner rather than later with the Jets.

14. I know it's a stretch, but on that last drive when Denver absolutely, positively had to make a play ... yeah, Jay Cutler reminded me of No. 7.

15. One game into the season, and Chicago safety Mike Brown is crying in the locker room afterward. Why? If I were to guess, I would say his knee injury is more serious than a sprain. Brown was lost midway through last season with a knee injury, and, trust me, guys don't tear up after losing a season opener. Stay tuned.

Five things I like

1. The guy blasting Open My Eyes from his speakers in the parking lot at Qualcomm Stadium. Now, more than ever, turn the Nazz up.

2. Mike Ditka calling it like it should be on ESPN's Sunday Morning Countdown. "If you're going to kill someone," Ditka said, addressing the league's conduct issue, "go buy a gun. Simple as that."

3. Vince Young with the football.

4. The new Ben Roethlisberger.

5. Brian Brohm's chances for reuniting with Bobby Petrino.

Five things I don't like

1. Romeo Crennel's long-term future.

2. Kansas City's playoff prospects.

3. Chad Pennington's chances of making it through another season uninjured.

4. Jacksonville sans place-kicker.

5. The Giants pass defense.

Just asking but ...

Did anyone have a worse debut than Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnulo?

Is Cleveland's pass protection that bad or Pittsburgh's pass rush that good?

Is it too early to start calling out clubs for passing on Adrian Peterson?

So, now, how do you like Kansas City's chances in Chicago next weekend?

You think maybe, just maybe, St. Louis should start playing Steven Jackson in preseason games ... just to make sure he KNOWS HOW TO HOLD THE FOOTBALL?

My top five

1. Indianapolis
2. New England
3. San Diego
4. Baltimore
5. Chicago

My bottom five

1. Cleveland
2. Atlanta
3. Kansas City
4. Oakland
5. Miami
