Carr misses second practice, Testaverde likely Carolina's starter

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Vinny Testaverde is the leading candidate to start at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers after he practiced for a second straight day Thursday.

Testaverde, who turns 44 next week, and undrafted rookie Matt Moore took all the snaps as David Carr missed his second straight practice with a concussion.

Coach John Fox held off selecting a starter for Sunday's game against Atlanta, but said Testaverde has looked good after he was sidelined with a right Achilles' tendon injury last week.

"He got through practice fine today," Fox said.

Carr sustained a concussion late in Sunday's loss to Tennessee, when he was sacked seven times. Fox said Carr has yet to be cleared by doctors to return to the field.

"A lot of it is precautionary," Fox said. "Physically he may feel fine, but playing NFL football is a little bit different as far as potential problems with blows to the head."

Carr also missed a game with a back injury last month. The Panthers were then forced to sign Testaverde, who led Carolina to a win in Arizona four days later.

Carr was the only player to miss practice. Center Justin Hartwig (thumb), tackle Jordan Gross (ankle) and receiver Keary Colbert (foot) all returned after missing Wednesday's workout. Receiver Steve Smith was back on the field after sitting out Wednesday to rest, while linebacker Thomas Davis practiced after missing Wednesday to tend to a family matter.
