The Patriots didn't have to make Brady available. In fact, most of the media here for Super Bowl XLII figured Brady wouldn't make a public appearance until Media Day on Tuesday.

And it seemed logical, given the club's reputation for secrecy. But the Patriots decided against it, bringing out Brady along with five of his teammates, and good for them.

They defused a potential distraction.

By making Brady available, they not only removed his injury as a subject of discussion and debate the next 24 hours; they reduced the crowds, the attention and the questions Brady would attract when he appears with teammates at Media Day.

And that is a good thing.

"How's the ankle?" someone asked Brady after he climbed the stage at the team's Scottsdale hotel.

Brady smiled.

"What did the coach say?" he asked.

Uh, not much.

"That's different," he laughed. "It's feeling good. I'll be ready to go."

Well, that takes care of that.
