GLENDALE, Ariz. -- This wasn't just the biggest upset in NFL history, it was one of the top five sports upsets ever. That's correct ... ever.
The New York Giants defeating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII does not reach the Upset DefCon Level of the U.S. defeating the Soviets in hockey or N.C. State upsetting Houston or Mike Tyson losing to Buster Douglas. But as Mercury Morris might say, it's in the neighborhood.
One thing is for sure: When it comes to NFL upsets this beats the previous standard bearer, which was the Jets defeating the Colts in Super Bowl III in 1969.
The reason why is because what was at stake. A Patriots win not only meant they would have joined teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers as one of the two of three greatest dynasties but the Patriots would have joined the Miami Dolphins as the only two undefeated teams in league history.
There was more on the line in a Super Bowl than ever before and the Giants sent the Patriots packing.
This game was the very definition of an all-time upset. It was the kind of shocker that will be talked about for decades, if not forever.
