Remember 'White House?' Cowboys, Pacman could be scary combo

I see the Dallas Cowboys continue to be tantalized by Pacman Jones. Great. My only question is: How soon before they start pushing for Michael Vick?

Taking on Jones makes sense, but only if you're in the bail bond business. The guy is a part-time football player and full-time headache. He lives by the motto: Anything worth doing is worth overdoing, especially when it comes to screwing up.

I don't know how many times he's been involved with the law. Frankly, I lost count. Five? Six? Seven? Eight? It doesn't matter. Whatever it is it's too many for a locker room.

So why would the Cowboys be interested? Because they need another cornerback? Please. A lot of teams need another cornerback. But they need a cornerback who suits up for the Giants or the Eagles, not the Gold Club.

They want someone who's dependable, too, which makes Jones eligible if you're assembling an All-Arrest Team. Because if there's one thing you can bank on with Pacman Jones it's that sooner or later he'll wind up in a squad car.

Usually it's sooner because Pacman Jones can't help himself. He goes with police blotters like Levi goes with Strauss.

So let me ask this one more time: Why would the Cowboys be interested in him?

It's one thing if you're the New England Patriots and have a veteran locker room to handle a Corey Dillon. But tell me who stands up to Jones in Dallas if and when there's an issue? Terrell Owens? Tank Johnson?

And don't tell me character is not important. When the Cowboys self-destructed in the late 1990s there were stories of a locker room run amok, with players at a local pleasure dome known as the "White House" getting in more than a little R&R, if you know what I mean.

Now the Cowboys are flirting with a guy who was suspended last season and who last month was sentenced to three years' probation for felony obstruction of police officers, stemming from a 2006 incident.

"It seems like all over the country Pacman has been able to wriggle out of allegations, and we were pleased to have a felony stick," the district attorney said then.

Wow. Now that's the kind of guy I want playing for me.

Of course, Jones isn't playing for anyone right now because commissioner Roger Goodell hasn't lifted his suspension. That means Goodell and the NFL consider Jones someone they don't want to have around. Not yet anyway.
