You can stop looking for Terrell Suggs at Baltimore's training camp. The defensive end/linebacker is not expected to report Wednesday when the team's veterans check in.
Suggs is Baltimore's franchise player and one of the most valued members of its defense. But he hasn't signed his one-year tender and can't practice until he does.
That should happen sometime next month, probably toward the end of training camp, with Suggs staying away from the team's training camp until then. Baltimore cannot fine Suggs because he's not under contract, and he can't join them until he decides he's ready.
While that might anguish his coaches and the team's front office, it is a bonus for Suggs. By staying away he doesn't risk the kind of injury that claimed Washington's Phillip Daniels for the season.
In essence, he can do what many veterans cherish: Cut his training camp short. Michael Strahan did it a year ago while mulling retirement, and it didn't seem to affect his play. Suggs might follow the same script.
"His situation is a little bit unique," coach John Harbaugh said the other day. "He's got to do what's best for him."
Apparently he is.
