Jul. 26--OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys' two first-round draft picks, running back Felix Jones and cornerback Mike Jenkins, agreed to five-year contracts on Friday night and are expected to be in training camp today.
Terms of the deals weren't announced.
The players missed the first day of training camp Friday and will miss today's morning practice, but each is expected in uniform for the afternoon session.
"I'm excited. I get to come to camp," Jones said from Dallas. "I was excited to go through the whole process, but now I'm ready to play."
Coach Wade Phillips didn't view the rookies missing the first day of practice as a problem.
"These days, especially these guys who went to the OTAs and minicamp, that's basically the first 15 days that we do in training camp," Phillips said. "It's good to repeat it. But they missed a real basic day today, that's what they missed."
Jones is expected to back up starter Marion Barber and bring more speed to the position.
Jenkins, who will be part of a deep secondary, is expected to play in nickel and dime packages.
Ellis could be in his last year: Greg Ellis believes this could be his final season with the Cowboys.
Ellis, who is entering his 11th season, was the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year last season. He had a career-high 12 1/2 sacks and earned his first Pro Bowl berth.
Yet the Cowboys are grooming second-year player Anthony Spencer to take over for Ellis at outside linebacker.
"Not a concern, but [it's] a reality that can very well happen," Ellis said after Friday's first training camp practice. "It's not a stretch of anybody's imagination. Now, I'm just trying to do what I can do to help this team win."
