Offense beginning to click for Campbell: Fourth-year QB picks up the pace in Zorn's West Coast...
"The first thing he wants out of the quarterback is to get to the line of scrimmage and get going," Campbell said. "There's no waiting around. By us [the quarterbacks] doing that, we're teaching everyone to do that. Once we start rolling with the offense, we're not waiting for anyone.
"I had this offense my senior year in college. That kind of gave me an idea of what we're doing. That helped me out a lot. The terminology is a little bit different. I had nothing against Al's offense. I thought it was a great offense. But I like this offense."
Al Saunders was the associate head coach-offense in 2006 and 2007. That was the first time Campbell had consecutive seasons in the same offense in a while.
In 2007, Campbell completed 60 percent of his passes and was showing progress when he suffered a season-ending knee injury.
"I think a successful quarterback in the NFL starts with a 60 percent completion rate," Zorn said.
The West Coast offense, which Zorn has brought to Washington, is pass-completion friendly. It has a large horizontal component to the passing game, giving quarterbacks short throws to backs and receivers.
Still, Campbell has a learning curve to navigate. That's what had Zorn excited this week.
"He got it in his mind that, 'I'm going for it,' and pushed through a lot of decisions he might have turned down three or four days ago," Zorn said. "He's trying to use the techniques we're teaching him. He's making progress.
"Now, he's got to string those things together."
