Dolphins: Five things to know

Dolphins: Camp tour | Prisco

DAVIE, Fla. -- Observations from Miami Dolphins camp:

1. The biggest issue hanging over the Dolphins is who the starting quarterback will be in Week 1. During offseason work, it appeared it might be second-year player John Beck. But he has struggled in the first week-plus of camp, which has set him back in a big way. Josh McCown was listed as the starter on the team's first depth chart, but first-year coach Tony Sparano said that was based on seniority. Nothing more. Based on what I saw when I watched two practices, rookie Chad Henne was the best of the three competing for the job. He looked sharp and confident and looked like a veteran. "I've seen him go all through all the progressions," Sparano said. "He'll go from one to two and end up at four, which is kind of nice." McCown might open the season as the starter, but look for Henne to have the job by the midway point. He just might be the franchise passer the Dolphins haven't had since Dan Marino retired.

2. Running back Ronnie Brown is still battling back from major knee surgery in 2007. Brown is running and cutting and planting. But he isn't taking hits on his knee. That's the next hurdle. Ricky Williams has returned from his football exile and looked good. Look for Brown, when he's back all the way, to share carries with Williams. It should be a good 1-2 punch.

3. It's strange to watch the Dolphins defense work and not see Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas. They are both gone, Thomas to the Cowboys and Taylor to the Redskins. That will put a lot of pressure on young players to step up. The Dolphins signed outside linebacker Charlie Anderson as a free agent from Houston and they're excited about what he can do rushing the passer in their 3-4 scheme. They've also worked defensive ends Matt Roth and Vonnie Holliday as standup rushers, although it's probably just some experimenting.

4. Wide receiver Derek Hagan, a third-year player from Arizona State, is having a good camp and has moved past Ernest Wilford as the second receiver on the depth chart. Wilford hasn't had a good camp so far, while Hagan has excelled. Ted Ginn Jr. will be the No. 1 receiver.

5. The Dolphins brought in 47 new players, which is a sign they are in transition after a 1-15 record last season. That record got Cam Cameron fired, to be replaced by Sparano, who comes over from the Cowboys. Sparano was the handpicked choice of new Dolphins president Bill Parcells. Along with GM Jeff Ireland, those three are in charge of rebuilding this team. It was interesting to see Parcells on the field working with players after Monday night's practice. He was engaged in some blocking drills with rookie guard Shawn Murphy. The cornerstone of their rebuilding is left tackle Jake Long, the first overall pick in this year's draft.
