Bills burner Evans makes work, not extension, a priority

The Evans-Edwards connection is only part of what's going on with the Bills' passing attack. The Bills added rookie wide receiver James Hardy, who immediately becomes a red-zone threat, and still have Josh Reed and Roscoe Parrish. Plus, there's running back Marshawn Lynch, who should be more involved as a receiver.

But Evans remains the Bills' go-to receiver and the deep threat opponents must respect -- maybe now more than ever, because of Schonert, and let Evans explain.

"Last year was a challenging year," he said, "simply for the fact that we knew I would get doubled a little bit. But I wasn't ever put in a situation to win, basically. I was pretty much stationery out on the outside, easy to double.

"Turk has done a lot of things with moving guys around, and moving me around. That's what you need to be dynamic in this league. We have a lot of different receivers who can do things with the ball, so I'm excited about it."

What he's not excited about is his unsettled contract, but you'd never know it watching him practice or listening to him afterward. I know because I did both Monday, asking him after the morning workout if he ever considered pulling a Peters and not showing up.

"Not really," he said. "It didn't cross my mind because they don't have to give me an extension."

Tell me the last time you heard a star wide receiver make that statement.

"For me, this is not just about me being here to satisfy them," Evans said. "This is about me being here to do what I have to do to get better."

Maybe he should pass the word to Peters. Someone should. Because nothing happens until or unless he shows up. Evans understands. But then Evans understands so much more about this game than most.

"I would love to stay here," he said. "I've told them that and expressed that to them. I hope something works out."

So do I. Not just for Evans. For the Buffalo Bills.
