CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A day after backup quarterback Matt Moore injured a leg, the Carolina Panthers acquired Josh McCown from Miami on Friday for a future draft pick.
McCown had signed with the Dolphins in the offseason after starting 33 games in a six seasons in Arizona, Detroit and Oakland. The former third-round pick has thrown 35 touchdowns and 40 interceptions.
McCown could serve as Jake Delhomme's backup if Moore is unable to play in the season opener Sept. 7 at Arizona. Moore bruised his left leg when he was sacked late in the third quarter Thursday night in a preseason loss to Pittsburgh.
The move likely means third-stringer Brett Basanez will be released when the Panthers reduce their roster to 53 players Saturday.
