PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday signed Sean McHugh, a tight end who started 12 games for the Detroit Lions last season.
McHugh also played for Tennessee and Green Bay. The former Penn State fullback will be the Steelers' third tight end behind starter Heath Miller and backup Matt Spaeth.
McHugh caught 17 passes in 15 games last season.
The Steelers had a roster spot open after trading former starting center Sean Mahan to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday. Mahan lost his starting job this season to Justin Hartwig.
