If Quinn can't beat out Anderson, Quinn must really ...

CINCINNATI -- Brady Quinn must really suck.

That's the logical conclusion. That's the only thing that makes sense. The Cleveland Browns' starter at quarterback, Derek Anderson, simply is no good, yet he continues to play. Quinn is the backup with the $20.2 million contract and the first-round pedigree, yet he can't get on the field.

Ergo, Brady Quinn sucks.

I asked Quinn something along those lines after the Browns beat the Cincinnati Bengals 20-12 Sunday. I'll get to his response in a minute. First, though, get this through your head: Yes the Browns won, but it doesn't vindicate Derek Anderson. These were two winless teams at Paul Brown Stadium. Somebody's quarterback had to win -- Cincinnati's was Ryan Fitzpatrick, by the way -- and Derek Anderson was that somebody. But let's not read too much into it, OK?

Cleveland won in spite of Anderson, who threw for just 138 yards. He had one pass picked off, had another pick nullified by a Cincinnati penalty and had a third pick dropped. His passer rating was a mediocre 74.7, which nearly doubled his season rating of 43.5 coming into Sunday.

Anderson definitely sucks. We can see that with our own eyes.

So Brady Quinn must suck as well. We can't see it -- we can't see it at all -- but that is the deduction to make based on the continued presence of Derek Anderson on the field and Brady Quinn on the sideline.

So, back to Brady. I asked him what it's like to watch Derek Anderson continually run onto the field, put up average-to-awful numbers, and still get to play some more. Does it make him wonder if the Browns think he isn't, um, very good?

Quinn didn't flinch. If he's as poised in the pocket as he is when he's being asked if he sucks, he has all kinds of leadership potential. Here's what he said:

"It's not about numbers, playing quarterback," Quinn said. "It's about putting your team into position to win a game, and Derek had us in that position today. I wasn't thinking about (replacing him)."

Browns coach Romeo Crennel was. Crennel was contemplating a switch at quarterback in the third quarter, after Anderson followed a horrible first half (4-for-10 for 27 yards) by throwing an interception on his first series of the second half and going three and out on the next series.

"I decided to give him another chance," Crennel said. "He took advantage of it and finished out the game on a good note."

Anderson, whose job security had been debated throughout last week in Cleveland, didn't want to hear about Brady Quinn after the game. When the topic was broached, Anderson did everything but close his eyes, jam his fingers in his ears and sing the theme song to Sesame Street.
