Coaches love to say they don't read the newspapers.
No one believes them.
With that in mind, consider what Dallas Cowboys Coach Wade Phillips had to deal with Monday morning, mere hours after his team was eviscerated by the St. Louis Rams 34-14 in one of the franchise's worst across-the-board performances in some time.
As if the injury to starting quarterback Tony Romo, the high-profile suspension of cornerback Adam Jones and three losses in four weeks weren't weighing heavily enough on Phillips, the Dallas Morning News had a not-so-subtle suggestion to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
What has been gathering steam for a month reached something of a crescendo as the Cowboys played by far their worst game of the Wade Phillips era. And frankly, it should be the last game of the Phillips era . . ."
Phillips endured Monday -- and the Monday morning quarterbacks -- to be greeted with this from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Tuesday.
On a day when the coach of the Dallas Cowboys talked about taking personal responsibility and a need for changes, he absolved himself.
"I'm not changing," Coach Wade said. "I'm going to coach the way I've always coached."
That is kind of the problem. And why the time has come for him to go.
We know "hard knocks" loves the Cowboys.
Apparently, in more ways than one.
