News briefs: Pats' Welker not holding grudges after hard hit

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker doesn't expect an apology from Ryan Clark for leveling him and said the Steelers safety made a good play Sunday.

Clark said after Pittsburgh's 33-10 win he wanted to apologize but didn't see Welker after the game.

The play occurred late in the third quarter after Matt Cassel's pass was tipped and went by Welker, who didn't see Clark and was hit hard.

He lay on the ground briefly, then went to the sideline and missed the rest of the game.

He participated fully in practice on Wednesday, but said it's up to the doctors and coaches to decide if he will play Sunday at Seattle.

Welker watched a replay of the hit and said Clark "came in and made a good play."

Clark received a 15-yard penalty, though, for unnecessary roughness.

Welker is listed as 5-feet-9 and 185 pounds. Clark is 5-11 and 205. Full story

Depleted Pats re-sign LB Colvin

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Rosevelt Colvin spent weekday mornings fixing his daughters' hair and driving them to school in Houston. Sometimes he would be in Indianapolis at the two UPS stores he owns.

On Sundays, he would go to church and then relax, perhaps by watching an NFL game on television. He had plenty of time to mow his lawn and eat dinner at home.

Freed from the strict routine of a player, the dangerous pass rusher had settled into a fulfilling life of a husband, father and small-business owner after being released by the Houston Texans at the end of training camp.

Then the New England Patriots called.

Falcons expect DT Jackson to play

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Falcons expect Grady Jackson to be available for Sunday's game at New Orleans after the defensive tackle was not one of the players suspended by the NFL for violating the league's anti-doping policy.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said league chief counsel Jeff Pash had asked for additional information from Jackson.

Jackson was on a list of players accused of using a diuretic, which can serve as a masking agent for steroids.

The six suspended players were defensive linemen Charles Grant and Will Smith and running back Deuce McAllister of the Saints; defensive linemen Kevin and Pat Williams of Minnesota; and long snapper Bryan Pittman of Houston.

Bengals sign veteran LB Hobson

CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Bengals signed veteran linebacker Victor Hobson on Wednesday to bolster their injury-plagued defense.

A sixth-year pro, Hobson was cut by the New England Patriots just before the regular season began. He played five years for the New York Jets, making 58 starts that included 14 of 16 games last season.

He had 62 tackles with two sacks last season. For his career, Hobson has 334 tackles, 11 sacks, three interceptions and five fumble recoveries.

The 6-foot, 250-pound second-round draft pick from Michigan joins a team that has lost a half-dozen defensive players to injury. The latest was safety Marvin White, who tore knee ligaments in Sunday's 34-3 loss to Baltimore.

Kelly: Fins should face wintry conditions

TORONTO -- If Jim Kelly had his way, the Miami Dolphins would always have to deal with wintry conditions when they traveled to play the Buffalo Bills.

That's why Kelly, who quarterbacked the Bills to four consecutive Super Bowl defeats, isn't happy that the Bills won't have the cold weather to help them when they face archrival Miami under the roof at Toronto's Rogers Centre this weekend.

Kelly and former Dolphins rival Dan Marino were in Toronto on Wednesday to host a series of Ontario high school bowl games and promote the first regular-season game of the "Bills in Toronto" series, an eight-game, $78 million agreement that runs through the 2012 season.

Kelly, a four-time Pro Bowler and Hall of Famer, said the long-standing rivalry between the Bills and Dolphins means Miami's visit is often the biggest date on Buffalo's home schedule.

C Spencer latest Seahawk on IR

RENTON, Wash. -- Seahawks center Chris Spencer will miss the rest of the season with a herniated disk in his back, but he is hoping he can avoid surgery by resting.

Spencer became the 11th Seattle player on injured reserve in this lost season. Converted guard Steve Vallos will make his second career start on Sunday for Seattle (2-10) against New England (7-5).

Spencer said he kept playing through a bulging disk that began bothering him in training camp and caused him to miss all but the final preseason game.

When quarterback Matt Hasselbeck had a bulging disk early this season, he sat out five games to rest it. But Seattle's first-round draft choice in 2005 took anti-inflammatory injections to start the first 11 games.
