Stallworth released from Miami jail after 24 days

MIAMI -- Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth has been released from a Miami jail after serving 24 days for DUI manslaughter.

His attorney, Christopher Lyons, says Stallworth was released from the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center early Friday.

The 28-year-old Stallworth served 24 days of the 30-day jail sentence after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter. Stallworth struck and killed a pedestrian in an early morning crash March 14. Police said he had spent the night drinking at a swank Miami Beach nightclub.

Stallworth has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL. He signed a seven-year, $35 million contract with the Browns before last season but was injured much of the year, finishing with 17 catches for 170 yards and a touchdown.

Michael Vick was indicted under the RICO statute (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) for interstate dog-fighting, gambling, financing, promoting, and housing the "Bad Newz Kennels" on his Virginia property.  Then he lied to federal authorities about his involvement.  Later, he pled guilty to the charges and admitted to running the operation for ...(more)

I can see we as a society have our priorities in order.

Kill a Human = Less then 1 month in jail, then what appears to be a temporary suspension from the NFL

vs

Kill some dogs = 3 Years in jail, + Parole, Community Service, and an end to your NFL career.

I guess Michael Vick should have just been training Humans to fight.

I agree with all the comments on this issue... He killed someone and gets a slap on the wrist...Vick killed some dogs he gets life in the publics eyes and looses his career money everything...Stallworth still has his condos in Miami and is still going to be able to play again. If that were me that killed that person i wouldnt be here today to type about it that is for sure...

Stallworth didn't get off light because of money.
Money has nothing to do with it. A first time offender for vehicular homicide routinely gets between 0-12 months. Some folks have gotten probation for it. No jail time at all.
The problem is that we don't take vehicular homicide seriously.
If you have a drivers license, you have a license to kill, plain and simple.
A few months

Let's hope he can turn things around and become a productive member of society. Hopefully, he will be doing volunteer/charity work on the lecture circuit for the rest of his life. The damage has been done, so let's hope he will try and make the best of a terrible situation by using his sports celebrity status to espouse the dangers of drinking and driving to today's youth. He took a life away, so ...(more)

I know people make mistakes, but when it's a mistake that kills someone then serious implications should follow. Meaning alot more than 27 days in the slammer! Throwing a ton of money to the victims family, and at least 5 years in prison would'nt be enough to ease the pain the victims family. But it would be a hell of alot more like Justice than 27 days! Outragous!! What these pro athlete ...(more)

People who compare this case to the Vick case have no clue what they are talking about.  Vick's case was a FEDERAL criminal case that involved a conspiracy and willingly breaking the law over several years and lying about it.  The Stallworth case is not a federal case and he fully cooperated and showed remorse.  Also, the victim's family did not want him to serve a long senten ...(more)

Where is the false outrage over this?  Mike Vick got death threats and his intelligence level questions for killing some dogs.  Not saying it is the same thing but this guy killed a guy while he was drunk off his ass in his Bentley.  Oh yeah, he got 24 days in jail.  Just trying to see the outrage.....no, no outrage?  OMG!  No one wants to actually admit they really d ...(more)

i sometimes wonder the IQ level of some of the levels CBS sportsline people when I read these things. has anyone considered the reason that stallworth only got 24 days is that it is racism?

what if it were somebody like steve garvey or lou holtz or even matt leinhart that hit and killed that man? you can be damn well bet for sure that the jail time would be harsh and much longer

I know a lot of stuborn, narrow minded people will disagree with the next statement.  The commisioner of football is undermining our justice department.  Agree or disagree, this is the system that we have adopted and I do not agree with further punishment from private organizations.  We the people have elcted officials that appoint people that handle these situations.  Now as t ...(more)

if you hit somene while intoxicated you get 24 days in jail, but if you (and im not codoning it) kill some dogs, you get upwards of 18 months? What has society come too. The point of jail and these punishments is to reprimand you for your negative actions and to show others that these things will not be tolerated. I hardly think this will leave a "i better not do that" feeling in a ...(more)

....may cast the first stone.

Is it wrong to drive drunk-YES

Why is it wrong? Because your chances of causing an accident and thus injury or killing another human being is higher

So couldn't we say the same thing for people who text while they drive, who drive while on prescription drugs, who drive without enough sleep, who recieve "road head&qu ...(more)
