Broncos: Five things to know

DENVER -- Observations from Denver Broncos camp:

1. If there is such a thing as an underrated superstar, it's cornerback Champ Bailey. Every season he dominates his position with little fanfare, prancing or stupidity. Here's a piece of good news for the Broncos: Bailey looks fantastic in camp.

Out of Nowhere Man
Mike Freeman selects Jabar Gaffney for the Broncos' Out of Nowhere Man Jabar Gaffney might seem an odd choice since he has been in the league for seven seasons. Yet he has rarely been a significant factor on an offense playing for the Texans and Patriots. He has been solid but not spectacular. This time, with the Broncos, he has one of his best chances to catch more than 50 passes. It's unlikely but possible; possible because he could step in for Brandon Marshall if Marshall acts like a knucklehead.

He's put his issues behind him, or is doing a great job of seeming like it, and it would be far better for the team to have him develop into a dominating DE than continue the FA circus that has been occurring for years. I don't believe he really has it in him to be a NT, so come on Marcus, prove you have the quickness to be a DE in the 3-4!

2. Denver has a nice stable of running backs, but don't expect any type of season-long rotation system. LaMont Jordan will play a key role in the running game, at least early, and if top draft pick Knowshon Moreno isn't carrying most of the load by the end of the year it would be a stunner. For now, Moreno is recovering from a sprained left knee and will return later in the preseason. That injury won't prevent him from having every opportunity to become the main ball carrier.

3. The problem for Denver is the same thing that was an issue last season: The defense is going to be dreadful. The addition of safety Brian Dawkins will help but not enough to stop teams from lighting up the group.

4. Coach Josh McDaniels runs his camp and practices exactly like his mentor, Bill Belichick. Secrecy is the word and McDaniels says little, if anything, about injuries. This type of approach is always risky because it usually only works if the coach wins. If McDaniels loses he'll face an angry media.

5. Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan continues to do something I witnessed him do when he was defensive coordinator of the Giants more than a decade ago: run sprints with the players. When Nolan isn't running he's an excellent coordinator and might be the best offseason pickup for the Broncos.
