Favre named one of five permanent captains for Vikings

MINNEAPOLIS -- When Brett Favre signed with the Minnesota Vikings less than a month ago, he openly wondered if he could make all the plays he used to make and last all the way through a 19th season in the NFL.

One thing he didn't doubt was his ability to lead.

That confidence was verified when the Vikings elected the 39-year-old quarterback as one of five team captains for the 2009 season.

Guard Steve Hutchinson, defensive tackle Kevin Williams, linebacker E.J. Henderson and kicker Ryan Longwell are the other permanent captains this season. The Vikings will also pick a sixth captain on a game-by-game basis.

The Vikings open the season on Sunday at Cleveland, and Favre said earlier this week that he is ready to lead them.

"Chemistry is so important. I don't care how good of a player I may be [or] the next guy may be," he said. "In this game of football, it takes 11. Being on the same page, the unit that plays more as one than as opposed to a bunch of individuals is the one that succeeds."

Favre signed with the Vikings on Aug. 18 and has been working ever since to get up to speed with his teammates on the field and earn their trust in the locker room. He addressed the team on Monday, saying he felt the need to let them know personally that he ended his second retirement for the right reasons.

When he joined the Vikings just after they broke training camp, there was some speculation that his teammates would not look favorably upon someone coming in so late to the game. There was also talk that Favre was coming back just to get revenge on the Green Bay Packers for choosing to move forward with Aaron Rodgers, or that he was doing it for the $12 million check.

So Favre asked coach Brad Childress to speak to the team and delivered a 10-minute speech to try to allay those fears.

"You can't coach chemistry. You can't fake it. It has to happen," Favre said. "You have to believe in one another and that is ongoing. This is a good group of guys; it really is. As I told them, I am honored to be a part of this team."

The words apparently hit home with the rest of the team.

"He pretty much answered everybody's questions," Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe said. "Cleaned up everybody's wonders."

It's not the first time that Favre has made such a favorable initial impression. Last year, the New York Jets made him a captain less than a month after he was acquired in a trade from the Green Bay Packers.

"I think the guys from within the last three weeks have gotten a pretty good judge about what type of guy I am," Favre said, "what type of player [I am]."

5 "permanent captains"...for the year.  Way to Vikes!  If that doesn't work, they should try the reverse - 48 captains.  Maybe that will work.  Have they ever heard of the saying 1 chef per kitchen?  Well the same goes with captains of ships or of sports teams.  2 in the NFL, only because it's totally different players in on offense and defense.  But 5?  ...(more)

Damn people, Ya, he cant make a permanent decision but at 40 he's still able to get out there and get it done, why dog him so bad? He is in the position where he can still get out there and be a difference maker, make 12 mil, still be the headline on sportcenter, and like it or not, at his age, he's doin it...what are the rest of us doing at 40? Easy to bitch from a keyboard aint it?

Without checking, my guess is EVERY starting QB in the NFL is one of the teams captains.  Usually they have the QB, another offensive player usually on the field most of the time, the defensive signal caller (the one with the speaker in the helmet), another defensive player usually on the field most of the time, one of the kickers or the holder on kicks, and one other selected player each gam ...(more)

Vikings fans...kiss Brad Childress goodbye now...he's finally done it.  He just made a mockery of not only the team, but King Lear...*ahem...Brett Favre himself.  I hope the best for you guys, but the road to the Superbowl will go through the NFC East.

....is all Brett Favre is. This primadonna just wants the limelight on his way to seeing the light on the impending end of his career. Sure, the guy will throw TD's AND Int's, but let's be real--for the last five or six years, his 'spectacular' passes have been little more than hail mary's.

How is this any different than what Michael Jordan did. Did he not retire 3 times as well? If Brett were to retire for good after this season, this would be his 3rd retirement. The same as everyone's precious Michael Jordan. Give this guy a break.

Come to think of it.He retired twice already but he did not miss a season since he was the QB of the Packers.Clearly,he just want some rest during the off season. When Jordan retired,he miss some seasons. So technically,I can say that favre did not retire at all.I don't understand why someone who is one of the reasons why the NFL is so popular ...(more)
