Power Rankings: Bristling with weapons, beware of Eagles

Updated Oct. 13

They are sitting there, seemingly far away from the spotlight that has beamed down on many other teams early in this NFL season.

We've seen the light hit the Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals. We've watched the spotlight hit the New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings (especially Brett Favre), New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts.

But the only real illumination that this other team has received came from that released-from-prison backup quarterback and his return to the NFL.

Can the Philadelphia Eagles get some love?

The Eagles aren't undefeated, but they are 3-1 and have played two games without their starting quarterback, losing one of those games to the undefeated Saints.

Now that Donovan McNabb is back, finding as speedy a group of receivers he's had in his time in Philadelphia, the Eagles appear ready to make a real push.

They play in the same division with the Giants, their dreaded rivals, but the NFC East race looks like one that will be a season-long battle.

Yet, aside from Michael Vick, has anybody paid the Eagles much attention?

Part of that might be because the three teams they've defeated -- the Panthers, Chiefs and Bucs -- have a combined record of 1-13.

In their three victories, the Eagles have scored 38, 34 and 33 points. Keeping up that pace will be tough, but this Eagles offense is good. Wait until they get Brian Westbrook at top speed again.

McNabb's improvement the past couple of years is what draws me to the Eagles. He isn't the same athletic quarterback he was a few years ago, and that has actually made him a better passer. As his running numbers have decreased, his passing has improved.

McNabb's passer rating in Philadelphia's 33-14 victory over Tampa Bay on Sunday was 157.2, which is close to perfect. He had three touchdown passes and no interceptions. The Eagles have now won 34 straight games in which McNabb's passer rating is better than 100.

That's why this Eagles team is so dangerous. It is an offense that can pass it -- and be explosive. You need big chunks to win these days and Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson, the team's young receivers, can provide that. And let's not forget, it is a team that played in the NFC Championship Game last January.

Andy Reid is also one of the best coaches in football. McNabb is a top 10 passer, maybe better.

Coach-quarterback. That's the key to winning titles.

Colts1Colts · Trends1
They should send Belichick a Christmas card. What a gift. They face a tough road game this week at Baltimore.
Saints2Saints · Trends2
They probably learned a valuable lesson against the Rams: Anybody can challenge you on any Sunday. They need to be careful when playing lesser teams.
Vikings3Vikings · Trends3
Get ready for the playoffs. The NFC North belongs to the Vikings. It's obvious nobody else in that division is in their class.
Bengals4Bengals · Trends5
You believe? You have to now. They've beaten both Baltimore and Pittsburgh twice. That's a statement right there.
Patriots5Patriots · Trends4
They are still in control of the AFC East, but don't lose this week against the Jets. Then it's another story.
Steelers6Steelers · Trends6
The champs have a wild-card look about them after being swept by the Bengals. That's OK. They won a Super Bowl a few years back taking that route.
Cowboys7Cowboys · Trends7
Just when they start feeling good about the way they're playing, they go and lay an egg in Green Bay. Who was that in Tony Romo's jersey?
Broncos8Broncos · Trends8
It's amazing how quickly their season has turned around. Now they play the Chargers with a gimpy Kyle Orton and first place on the line.
Chargers9Chargers · Trends12
They have a chance to take over first place in the AFC West this week if they can win at Denver. That's hard to believe after their start.
Cardinals10Cardinals · Trends10
The division title is theirs unless they have a disaster. Now they have to work on playing better at home because they will have a home playoff game.
Eagles11Eagles · Trends9
They might want to stay away from the West Coast. That is two bad games out there after losing to the Chargers on Sunday. Was that their defense we saw against San Diego?
Giants12Giants · Trends13
They come off the bye with a huge game against Atlanta, trying to end a four-game losing streak. Did they dispose of the bad karma during the break? If not, they'll be watching come playoff time.
Texans13Texans · Trends14
They come off their bye with a chance to earn their first playoff berth with a good second half. The key will be how well they play on defense.
Falcons14Falcons · Trends11
With Michael Turner down with an ankle sprain, it's time Matt Ryan truly takes over the offense. He has been struggling, and that has to stop.
Ravens15Ravens · Trends15
They have a huge game with Indianapolis this week. I can tell the Ravens defense this: The Colts offense doesn't look anything like the Browns' unit.
Jaguars16Jaguars · Trends17
Don't look now, but they really are in the playoff hunt. The schedule is really soft, which will help their chances.
Packers17Packers · Trends18
They will look back on that loss to Tampa Bay in Week 9 the rest of the season. How did it happen? They still have major issues on their offensive line.
Jets18Jets · Trends16
If they don't win this week at New England, which won't be easy, they can kiss the playoffs goodbye. Were they overrated at 3-0? Yes.
Panthers19Panthers · Trends21
They have life. They've done a nice job of turning things around. Now they have to do it without Jordan Gross, which won't be easy.
Bears20Bears · Trends19
You have to start to wonder about Jay Cutler. He's trying to do too much. Where's Matt Forte? They are a playoff long shot now.
Dolphins21Dolphins · Trends20
Chad Henne time is here. His game-winning drive was impressive. Now they have a quick turnaround against Carolina.
Titans22Titans · Trends24
Don't look now, but Vince Young is 3-0. Can they make a run? Is it possible?
49ers2349ers · Trends25
Moral of their season: If you can't throw it consistently, you can't win. Alex Smith had a regress game against the Bears.
Seahawks24Seahawks · Trends22
Their disappointing season gets worse every week. They will not be a playoff team with the injuries they've had. Bad first year for Jim Mora Jr.
Bills25Bills · Trends23
Dick Jauron is gone. The Bills aren't playing very well and now must go to Jacksonville.
Chiefs26Chiefs · Trends27
OK, so it came against the Raiders. But winning on the road is big for this young team. Jamaal Charles might be the real deal at running back.
Redskins27Redskins · Trends28
They have life. The Redskins won a game, but does that matter for coach Jim Zorn? Not really.
Raiders28Raiders · Trends26
Tom Cable should be looking for a realtor. There is no way he comes back next season. When does somebody fire Al Davis?
Rams29Rams · Trends29
Steve Spagnuolo has to feel good about his team's effort. They are getting better. Just ask the Saints.
Buccaneers30Buccaneers · Trends30
They have to be thrilled with the way they are playing with Josh Freeman at quarterback. That bodes well for the future. Now it's time to fix the defense.
Lions31Lions · Trends31
They picked Matthew Stafford last spring to help fix the offense. Now they are another team that needs to fix its defense next spring. Good news: The Browns are coming to Detroit.
Browns32Browns · Trends32
That offense is as bad as I've seen. I mean ever. They can't even attempt passes down the field. What an eyesore.

Good rankings this week, Pete.  I am hopeful that my Bears can go into Atlanta and steal one from the Falcons, but we'll see.  I know that the bottom five teams could probably be sorted any which way, but honestly, the R ...(more)

Typically I disagree with your rankings but this week they seem pretty accurate.  The only thing glaring to me is how high you have the Cowboys ranked.  Thanks to their #3 receiver and tackling worse than I have seen at a pee wee league game they would have lost to the Chief ...(more)

Again, Pete, all you've done is regurgitate the standings.  How can you possibly think that will all of the defensive injuries, the Chargers are as good as #14.  Or that SF is 16.  I know, I know, you jumped on the bandwagon after the 49ers beat a St. Louis team that eve ...(more)

I do believe that the Eagles are a good team, and their offense is certainly scary.  You want to know why the Eagles are not in the spotlight right now?  Their defense.  Tampa Bay's offense is almost pathetic, yet Josh Johnson put up 240 yards and two TD's ...(more)

As much as I can't believe this, I actually agree with Prisco for the most part this week, albeit a few changes here and there.  But regardless, here are my rankings:

1.  Giants-- Easily the best team in the NFL.  The offense is solid, the defense is suffocating, the special teams get their jobs done, and the coach

Peyton Manning is on pace for one of the best years in his career and it doesn't seem like any team is currently capable of slowing down the Colts' offense. The defense has been playing spectacularly as well despite the loss of three start ...(more)

Not quite, Pete.  The coach and QB are pretty important, but don't leave out the GM.  Without a football mind at GM, the team will not be able to compete.  Buffalo's best years were under Bill Polian's control, and now the Colts are benefitting from his decisions.  The ...(more)

There area few things that are becoming clear now, and you can't really argue them anymore. We all have speculated and given our opinion, but now it's time to give props and blame where necessary. These things need to be said.

I see you made some comments about the Lions drafting some future help. Give me a break! The Lions could have the top 10 picks for the next 3 years and could find a way to screw that up. I don't pay much attention to your rankings, since all the undefeated teams are right on top.  I do like reading your comments on each team. You ...(more)

That is the analogy that suits Prisco's defiance towards the Wildcat and the Dolphins, or anyone else who runs it.  It is no longer a debate Pete.  The Wildcat works...and works well.  Did you catch Denver's version of it (Wild Horses).   Why would you continue to try to win this war.  I know you have bashed th ...(more)
