Power Rankings: Texans have passing chance against Colts

Updated Nov. 3

Here's a big game this week: Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts.

What?

As strange as that sounds, that's what we have Sunday in Indianapolis. The 7-0 Colts, who didn't look all that good last week against the San Francisco 49ers, play host to the red-hot Texans. At 5-3, Houston is in second place in the AFC South and has a chance to creep within two games if it can pull an upset.

If the Colts win, the division race is over. They will have a four-game lead with eight to go.

The 12 victories between the two teams are the most for any game this week, including Steelers-Broncos (11) and Cowboys-Eagles (10).

The Texans are in a big game? You bet.

What's even more appealing: There will be plenty of passes filling the air. The Texans lead the NFL in passing yards, while the Colts are second.

The Colts lead in yards per game and the Texans are right behind. Texans quarterback Matt Schaub is tied with Brett Favre and Drew Brees for the league lead in touchdown passes with 16. Peyton Manning is second with 15.

Let it rip, boys.

The Texans are two games over .500 at the halfway point for the first time in their history. That has them up to the No. 13 spot in the CBSSports.com Power Rankings, while the Colts remain in the top spot.

Houston did suffer a big hit to its offense when tight end Owen Daniels went down for the season with a knee injury. That will put more pressure on Andre Johnson outside in the passing game. He sees a lot of double coverage anyway, but now he might see three-man coverage. I mean it.

The Texans could easily be 7-1, by the way. They fumbled on the goal line with a chance to send the game into overtime against Jacksonville, then got stopped on downs at Arizona in the final seconds from the 1-yard line.

How big would this be if they won those two? As it is, it's plenty big.

In fact, it's the Game of the Week, based on the victories.

The Texans? Believe it.

The Power Rankings after Week 8:

Power Rankings
CurrentTeamPrevious
Colts1Colts · Trends1
They won four games in November by a total of 10 points. They're not dominating, but they are winning.
Saints2Saints · Trends2
They get a major test next week when the Patriots come to town for a Monday night game. Is that the end of the unbeaten season?
Vikings3Vikings · Trends3
Brett Favre might be having his best season. Who said he would flop? Oh, me.
Patriots4Patriots · Trends5
They bounced back nicely against the Jets and have a two-game lead in the division, but the Saints will be a great barometer for where they are now.
Cowboys5Cowboys · Trends7
They beat the Redskins, but they still looked off. They'll get it going Thursday against the Raiders.
Bengals6Bengals · Trends4
What was that in Oakland? That reminds us a little of why they're still the Bengals. They had no business losing that game.
Chargers7Chargers · Trends9
They are rolling again after a slow start. What else is new for this team? They are the class of the AFC West, just like we thought they'd be.
Cardinals8Cardinals · Trends10
They played a decent road game against the Rams, even if they made it interesting in the end. The running game is getting cranked up, which is great for the playoff run.
Eagles9Eagles · Trends11
They snapped a two-game losing streak against the Bears to keep their playoff chances solid. This is the time when the Eagles usually get it going.
Steelers10Steelers · Trends6
They just haven't looked that good this season. Something is off. It might be wise to work on that kickoff coverage.
Giants11Giants · Trends12
Eli Manning's big game saved their season against Atlanta. Now they face a tough road game at Denver on a short week.
Broncos12Broncos · Trends8
Was their start a fraud? It sure looks like it. They aren't playing well on either side of the ball, but especially on offense.
Jaguars13Jaguars · Trends16
If the playoffs started today, they'd be in. Wow. They aren't winning pretty, but they're finding a way.
Packers14Packers · Trends17
Losing Al Harris and Aaron Kampman for the season will impact that defense in a big way. It's good that the offense is playing better now to help offset it.
Falcons15Falcons · Trends14
They have three consecutive homes games to turn their season back around. The defense just gives up too many big plays.
Dolphins16Dolphins · Trends21
Chad Henne is growing up. As he does, they will be better. The playoffs are still possible. But don't lose at Buffalo.
Ravens17Ravens · Trends15
They've been a disappointment so far. If they lose to the Steelers this week, they can say goodbye to the playoffs.
Texans18Texans · Trends13
That loss at home to the Titans is a big hit to their playoff chances. They just never got it going on offense. Kris Brown choked two weeks in a row. Now the Colts come to town.
Titans19Titans · Trends22
They are somehow still alive at 4-6. Winning four consecutive games after opening 0-6 is impressive. Vince Young is doing a nice job.
Jets20Jets · Trends18
Mark Sanchez is playing like a rookie. But it doesn't mean he should sit down. He needs to grow and playing is the right way.
Panthers21Panthers · Trends19
They will likely have a new coach next season and that could mean the end for Jake Delhomme. He just isn't good enough.
Bears22Bears · Trends20
Is Lovie Smith in trouble? He might be. Cutler sure hasn't lived up to the expectations. He needs help.
49ers2349ers · Trends23
They can forget the playoffs now. The rest of the season is about finding out if Alex Smith is the long-term answer at quarterback.
Bills24Bills · Trends25
Perry Fewell's first game showed a team that will still fight. And there was a Terrell Owens sighting. Amazing.
Seahawks25Seahawks · Trends24
Count this team as one of the biggest flops of the season. But injuries have played a big part. Is Mike Holmgren coming to the rescue?
Chiefs26Chiefs · Trends26
They're on a two-game winning streak. Beating the Steelers is a big step for this young team. The Chiefs are improving.
Redskins27Redskins · Trends27
The best thing to come out of the Cowboys loss is that Jason Campbell played better. They're still fighting.
Raiders28Raiders · Trends28
Say hello to the bench, JaMarcus Russell. Bruce Gradkowski is the guy the rest of the way.
Lions29Lions · Trends31
Matt Stafford showed against the Browns that he was the right pick last April. They have their building block.
Rams30Rams · Trends29
Do you feel sorry a little for Steven Jackson playing on this team? He's having a huge season. And now Marc Bulger is out? Ouch.
Buccaneers31Buccaneers · Trends30
Josh Freeman played like a rookie against the Saints, but he will have those days. It's hard to believe that's a Bucs defense we've been watching. It tells us why Jim Bates was fired.
Browns32Browns · Trends32
The good news is Brady Quinn is looking better. The bad news is the defense regressed. They have a long way to go to being able to compete for a playoff spot.

IMO, the Colts are ranked above the Vikings only because of history, not because of this year's performance.  Yes the Vikings have a loss (against the defending SB champs on the road), but the Colts have played a very weak schedule and struggled in even some of those games.  ...(more)

No, that's just it. Just a legitimate question. How are the Colts ahead of the Saints? Is it club prestige? Because if not, the Saints voictories this year have been far more dominating and decisive. Absurd.

According to you, the Bengals and Ravens should be. Separated by a game in the division, and with both teams in the Top 10 in your Power Rankings, the showdown in Cincinatti seems like the game to watch. I feel like the Texans ...(more)

Sorry Pete but Favre played well in the Steeler game too. You know it was a fluke that both turnovers were turned into TD's. Without both of those, not just one, the Vikings win that game too. Report the news pete, tell it like it is, not the way you want it to be and some people will start to respect you a little.

What Pete failed to mention was that the 49ers came back and almost beat the Texans. They could just as easily be 4 and 4 instead of 5 and 3.  If the Colts can run decent they can win for sure. The Texans run defense isnt ...(more)

Is it time to stop ripping on Tony Romo? He's playing some of his best football. The defense, which was a problem much of the season, is playing better.
Is it really ever time to stop ripping on Tony Romo? I think all of the ripping on him has been that he can't win big games in the playoffs

Those are pretty reasonable power rankings, at least in my opinion.

The one thing I LOVE to see though is how highly rated the Cowboys are.  Sure, they deserve to be in the top 12, considering they've won a bunch of games in a row lately.  In fact, I'd put money on them winning 3 of their next 4 or 4 of their next

From all I have read and seen this is what is on the horizion?  Baring major injury's New Orleans winning home field through out the play offs?  Drew Brees and company is HOT!  And at home in the Dome watch out?  As for the AFC it still looks like Manning and his bunch?  However for the first time this se ...(more)

1. (1) Indianapolis- Similar to the Jacksonville game from week 1 they weren't at their best but they still won

2. (2) New Orleans - They just keep rolling

3. (3) Pittsburgh - I am sure it is higher than many of you have them but i think the champs are playing like they want to repeat

4. (4) New England -  Gaining momentum

5. (6) Minnesota - Offense
