Apologetic Snyder says 'Skins have 'let everyone down'

CLINTON, Md. -- Dan Snyder is embarrassed. He feels terrible. He's also hurt, frustrated and apologetic. Name a downbeat adjective, and he's all over it.

Snyder, Lerner man up amid man-made disasters

The Washington Redskins owner made some rare in-season comments about his team Tuesday, speaking at an event to celebrate the franchise's charitable program to renovate football fields at Maryland high schools.

He received nothing but cheers from appreciative students and faculty when introduced, a change of pace from the reception he and his team have heard at FedEx Field during a 2-5 start.

"We feel frustration and are disappointed for our fans," Snyder told the crowd. "Obviously our performance to date is not what we expected, and we hope to turn that around."

Afterward, speaking to a small group of reporters in a parking lot, Snyder elaborated -- although only in general terms.

Asked a question that referenced two recent controversies surrounding the team -- the suing of fans who couldn't pay for their premium tickets, and a total ban on fans carrying signs and banners into the stadium -- Snyder addressed neither issue.

"I feel bad for the fans. I feel sorry for the fans, and we're very, very appreciative of our loyal fan base," he said. "We just feel terrible. We're disappointed. We're embarrassed, and we hope to get it going soon."

Although the team says the ban on signs took effect at the beginning of the season, it was announced only recently, coinciding with an increase of negative signs targeting Snyder and front office chief Vinny Cerrato. Asked how he is affected personally, Snyder said: "It hurts."

"It really hurts," Snyder said. "We are really trying very, very hard, everyone at Redskins Park, the coaches, the players. The organization's quite frankly held together well, and I think we've got an opportunity the rest of the season to hopefully get it going. But to date we've let everyone down, including ourselves, and we know that and we're just apologetic.

"We've blown some games that obviously we think we should have won."

The questions got more pointed as the interview progressed. In the middle of a question about stripping of coach Jim Zorn of play-calling duties, the Surrattsville High School marching band happened to approach the area, playing at full volume. Snyder stopped the question and made small talk about the fact that Tuesday was Election Day while waiting for the band to pass.

Just as the music was quieting down, Snyder said he had to go. He walked away, leaving the question unanswered.

Fellow Hogs, make no mistake.  This is not something Dan Snyder would willingly do.  Not only does he not speak in public during the season, he doesn't speak to the press....ever.

Do not be fooled by this.  If you go to Redskins.com and watch the interview at this "press confrence," it was more l

An apology?  Really?  The same owner who earlier this year instituted a rule disallowing fans to bring in signs decrying the coaches and management?  This doesn't seem too kosher to me.  Why then the sudden change of heart?

Here's a suggestion:  How about explaining the reasons for your apology better than "we let you down".  It seems a little tri

It should be patently obvious to everyone by now that Daniel Snyder doesn't know a damned thing about how to run an NFL franchise. He's got a lot of money, a huge ego, and the Redskins are a toy he owns(but is clueless about how to make work right). He could try doing one of three things if he really wants to improve the team.

How in the world does the capitol of the USA have a racist team name.  The Redskins is offensive and it is absurd that this has not been changed.

Dan, don't use WE unless you have a frog in your pocket!  Is it YOU and only YOU that is responsible for the poor performance of your team.  If you used better judgment in choosing free agents on the UPCLIMB of their career as oppose to the DOWNSLIDE of their career (which you repeatedly do, and don't you realize that these free agents USE you to get their fat paycheck!).  You don't ...(more)

yes mr. snyder, you are very sorry.   but you are still making money faster than Clinton Portis chugs along, due to one of the most loyal fan bases in the nfl.   you don't like to see the signs of the fans' displeasure with the operation and performance of your team, but hey, sorry, put your posters away.  ...(more)

I am a die hard, life long Redskins fan. This did nothing for me, What else was he going to say? The fact is, Danny took no accountability for HIS organizations actions. I can deal with losing, I believe he is trying to win. He is trying the wrong way and unwilling to change, but I do believe he really wants to win. So I can forgive the on ...(more)

I didn't know the Redskins were owned by Mr. Big from Sex and the City....  Okay, that's a lame and not really within the cultural knowledge of most of the CBSSPORTS community, but look at the picture and try to tell me you don't see the resemblance.

I know from a very credible source (who knows this first hand) and told me that when he bought the team he held a meeting at 6:00 AM with the entire staff.

He came in to this meeting and said the following:

I'm the new owner of the Redskins
I'm very young.
I'm very rich.
I'm a prick.

To hear Snyder apologize surprised me but it doesn't make the Skins embarassing play excusable. If you're really sorry, fire Cerrato and start rebuilding the team. The season is already done.

No, Mr. Snyder you let everyone down.  It's not just about this season, it's about the entire Dan Snyder era.  One questionable move right after another, Bruce Smith, Deion Sanders, and Jeff George!!!  This isn't a Fortune 500 company Mr. Snyder you can't throw money at an NFL team, and it'll become an overnight success.  This is a football team, where you build with good scout ...(more)

Dan Snyder is the biggest Redskins fan out there.  He grew up a fan like many of us.  While the Skins have not had too much success under his ownership so far, we will win another superbowl someday.  I would rather have an owner like Dan Snyder than some of these other owners who do not spend money to bring in players and coa ...(more)

Don't think for a minute that "poor Danny is trying so hard and spending so much of his hard earned money"...AGHHHHH!!!  The Skins are one of the most profitable franchises in ALL SPORTS!  He is making money "hand over fist".  It is us, the fans, that are fitting the bill through his outlandish parking fees, absurd ticket prices, seat license fees, ...& ...(more)

The Washington Redskins have more money than any other team in the NFL, yet they field a mediocre team. How is this possible? Please let me know where this team went wrong. Go Niners!
