Colts safety Sanders, cornerback Jackson done for season

INDIANAPOLIS -- The injury bug is still haunting the Indianapolis Colts.

Cornerback Marlin Jackson and strong safety Bob Sanders were lost for the season Friday as the team placed them on injured reserve.

Jackson, who missed the second half of the 2008 season after injuring his right knee during practice, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury to his left knee during a non-contact drill Wednesday. He had been rehabbing the knee after he was hurt against Seattle on Oct. 4.

Sanders, a two-time Pro Bowler, tore his left bicep against the 49ers last weekend and will need surgery.

Sanders had just returned to the Colts' lineup two weeks ago. He had missed all of training camp and the first five games of the year after undergoing offseason knee surgery. He has missed 40 of 87 games during his injury-plagued, six-year NFL career.

Indianapolis' other veteran cornerback, Kelvin Hayden, is also expected to be sidelined for the next three to four weeks after he suffered a sprained knee during the 18-14 win over San Francisco. Hayden is not expected to undergo surgery.

"Not real sure [how long Hayden will be out]," coach Jim Caldwell said. "We're kind of looking at probably a three to four week window."

Prisco: Sanders loss a tough one | Sunday: Texans at Colts, 1 p.m. ET

The Colts (7-0) host AFC South rival Houston (5-3) this Sunday. Texans quarterback Matt Schaub and receiver Andre Johnson will likely be looking at a Colts defense with two rookies -- Jerraud Powers and Jacob Lacey -- starting at cornerback. Three-year veteran Melvin Bullitt will take Sanders' place at strong safety.

"[Sanders and Gonzalez] are fine football players, great leaders and members of our team," Caldwell said. "The thing about it, though, we've had young people step up and do a great job in their absence. We'll continue on that path."

Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez, meanwhile, underwent arthroscopic surgery Thursday to clean out loose particles in his right knee. Gonzalez suffered a sprained ligament in the knee during the Colts' season-opening win over Jacksonville. A date for his return has yet to be determined.

Wide receiver Pierre Garcon (ankle), defensive tackle Fili Moala (concussion), offensive tackle Tony Ugoh (rest) and placekicker Adam Vinatieri (knee) did not practice Friday. Garcon and Moala are both listed as questionable for the Houston game, as is running back Donald Brown (shoulder).

Defensive end Josh Thomas has returned to the Colts for the second time this season. Thomas originally played with the Colts from 2004-08, starting 12 games. And Indianapolis signed tight end Tom Santi off the practice squad.

It was only a matter of time before this happened to Bob Sanders.  I swear If I was a Colts fan I would be furious that he is still is on this roster.  This guy has been hyped up more then any player in NFL History next to Brian Bosworth.

Or even 12 games in a season?  I don't care how good he is supposed to be.  He is waisting cap space.

The Redskins had the same problem (among many others) with Shawn Springs and Marcus Washington.  They were arguably our best linebacker and db, but

I too am of the belief that Sanders isn't worth the money for the production.  He has been inactive/IR for half of the time he's been in INDY.  However, with the contract he just signed and the numerous injuries he has had since joining the league and those he had in college he has no trade value.  I don't think anybody is going to take on the contract of Sanders.  The Colt's d ...(more)

In my earlier post's I told all the Colts fans that the colts should trade Sanders as soon as he became heathly enough to play...while he still had value. This guy is done. He just cant stay well long enough to contribute. They could have gotten @ least 2nd or 3rd round picks for him. Now no one will touch him. Sad because I enjoy watch San ...(more)

So the Colts have lost Hagler and Jackson for the season - The replacements will be fine. I dont know why Keiaho was cut by Indy, personally him, session and brackett were the best trio of linebackers they had. Marlin Jackson has been a solid Corner for the last 3 years bu ...(more)

The Colts really need to see if they can get any trade value for Sanders.  His reputation is about to exceede his production.  At some point they have to admit Bullett has more value because he can dress every week, while Sanders is a spot player.

Time for the Colts to start thinking about trading Bob Sanders (Gasp). Indy's D does just fine without him in the lineup (which is often) and could get a decent player or two for him that can actually play 16 games a season.

It is obvious most of you live in fantasy land. The Colts have been making it without Sanders, and minimal help from the others who are hurt. Who has given up the least amount of points through 7 games? The Colts are 1st in fewest points allowed (they have played 1 less game than some teams). They have done it without most of the ...(more)

What can you say about Bob Sanders? When he plays, Sanders is one of the best defensive players in the league. He plays the game as ferociously as anyone, and I would venture to say that he hits the hardest. The big problem here is that the Colts have to play on without Sa ...(more)

Hellova rash of injuries, but this team is built to overcome it.  In the regular season, an offense like the Colts will be good enough to win the division and / or get a bye in the 1st round.  I'm thinking the Pats and Colts get a 1st round bye with the winner of the head-to-head in a few weeks taking it throughout.   Th ...(more)
