Power Rankings: No joke -- Bengals are serious contenders

Updated Nov. 10

Crazy. Nuts. Stupid. Typical Prisco.

Power Rankings: No joke -- Bengals are serious contenders - NFL - CBSSports.com Football

I know that's what many of you said, and it's what many of my colleagues said, when I picked the Cincinnati Bengals to make the playoffs.

But in the past few weeks, I'd be a rich man -- OK, I would be able to buy a nice tuna sandwich -- if I had a dollar for every time I've heard this:

"When you picked the Bengals, I laughed. I guess you were right."

Halfway home, I might be.

We've seen teams fall apart in the second half of a season -- especially teams like the Bengals, who have had a dark cloud following the franchise for years. But I'm starting to get the idea this is a different Cincinnati Bengals team.

You are as well.

It's OK to admit it. The Bengals are a good team. They are this year's Arizona Cardinals.

The 6-2 Bengals dominated the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday in a 17-7 victory that wasn't as close as that score. The victory gave them a sweep of the Ravens, keeps them atop the AFC North and sets up a huge showdown this week at Pittsburgh.

It also validated them. When the Bengals went to Baltimore and won earlier this season, some saw it as a fluke. The Bengals scored to win it in the final seconds, but they played well most of that game. Yet Baltimore's trip to Cincinnati saw the Bengals as 3-point home underdogs.

That was laughable. The Bengals are better. They showed it Sunday.

They are now No. 5 in our CBSSports.com Power Rankings. Fifth? Even I didn't think they'd be this good.

What they have is a top quarterback (Carson Palmer), a good running game with Cedric Benson and a defense that features the best pair of young corners in the league, Leon Hall and Johnathan Joseph. And, oh by the way, Chad Ochocinco is having a heck of a season.

If the Bengals can go into Pittsburgh and win this week, it would give them a sweep of the two teams in their division that played in the AFC Championship Game last January, the two teams most picked to battle to win the AFC North. That won't be easy beating the Steelers at Heinz Field, but they get a break with Pittsburgh coming off a Monday night road game.

Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis projected a confident image when I spent time with him this summer at training camp. You could tell he had an idea his team would be better.

"I think you're going to the playoffs," I told him.

"I hope you're right," he said.

I'm right. As nutty as it sounded then, it doesn't anymore.

The Power Rankings after Week 9:

Power Rankings
CurrentTeamPrevious
Saints1Saints · Trends4
What is hidden about the Saints is that there are a lot of good, young players on their roster. I can't imagine them taking a big step back.
Colts2Colts · Trends1
Let's not forget they get Anthony Gonzalez back next year, which will make the offense better. They are the team to beat in the AFC again.
Vikings3Vikings · Trends5
After blowing a chance to win the NFC title game in regulation, it must have killed the Vikings to see the Saints win the Super Bowl. Now Minnesota has to play the waiting game with Brett Favre.
Chargers4Chargers · Trends2
They have a lot of contracts that come up, and they will have to make some tough decisions. There is still a lot of talent on this team, but they have to get over the hump at some point. Losing to the Jets was a big upset.
Cowboys5Cowboys · Trends3
Wade Phillips comes back for another year, and he has to get this team past the first round of the playoffs again. Tony Romo is in the same situation.
Eagles6Eagles · Trends6
Can we stop the Donovan McNabb trade talk? He will be back, and he should be back. Will Brian Westbrook?
Jets7Jets · Trends11
The next step will be letting Mark Sanchez do more. They have to throw it better in 2010. And they will.
Packers8Packers · Trends7
Aaron Rodgers showed he's a star in the making this season. That will make Green Bay a Super threat in 2010.
Bengals9Bengals · Trends8
They made big strides to win the division, but they have to improve the passing game. That means getting speed help outside.
Ravens10Ravens · Trends12
It's time for Joe Flacco and that passing game to take a big step forward. You have to get big chunks of yardage to win in this league.
Patriots11Patriots · Trends10
Tom Brady will be a year removed from his knee injury, which means he will be better. The key for the Patriots will be improving their pass rush.
Cardinals12Cardinals · Trends9
Matt Leinart takes over for the retired Kurt Warner. There are a lot of questions about the former Heisman winner, but the Cardinals staff believes in him. Do his teammates?
Broncos13Broncos · Trends13
What do they do with Brandon Marshall? Is he back? Is he traded? They need him, that's for sure.
Steelers14Steelers · Trends14
The concerns with this team are on both lines. They have to play better there. Isn't that the Steelers way?
Texans15Texans · Trends15
They had a winning season, but it's time to make the playoffs. They do have an explosive passing game, which gives them a good chance.
Falcons16Falcons · Trends16
They played the Saints tough twice with a lot of injuries. That has to give them hope heading into next season. They have to work on fixing that defense.
Giants17Giants · Trends20
There is some talk that Tom Coughlin could be in trouble if he doesn't win next season. I don't buy it. But they do have to improve the defense.
Titans18Titans · Trends17
Vince Young played well when he took over. Now he has to show he can do it again.
Dolphins19Dolphins · Trends18
I think this is a team to watch in 2010. Chad Henne will give the Dolphins a better chance to get to a Super Bowl. He does need a receiver.
49ers2049ers · Trends19
The Niners have talent, but they have to throw it better to be a playoff team. I think Alex Smith just might be the answer. The offensive line needs fixing.
Jaguars21Jaguars · Trends21
Jack Del Rio got another year, which some question. Does his quarterback get the same?
Panthers22Panthers · Trends22
They have to decide who plays quarterback. Is it Matt Moore or Jake Delhomme? It should be Moore. What to do with Julius Peppers?
Redskins23Redskins · Trends23
Mike Shanahan has to decide if Jason Campbell is his quarterback of choice. I bet he decides that he is. Hiring Jim Haslett was a good move for the defense.
Bears24Bears · Trends24
Lovie Smith has one year to show that he can turn this team around. Hiring Mike Martz as offensive coordinator is a great move.
Seahawks25Seahawks · Trends25
Pete Carroll has a long way to go to turn this team around. First decision is if Matt Hasselbeck is the right guy at quarterback.
Bills26Bills · Trends26
Is Chan Gailey the right choice? Let's put it this way: His hiring was a surprise. He does know offense.
Chiefs27Chiefs · Trends28
You can bet the first priority is trying to improve that offensive line. Matt Cassel took a beating.
Browns28Browns · Trends27
Eric Mangini gets another year, and he probably earned it late. Can Mike Holmgren turn this team around? He has a lot of work to do.
Buccaneers29Buccaneers · Trends30
Raheem Morris gets another year and his team should be better just because Josh Freeman will be better. Hey, they did beat the Saints late in the season.
Raiders30Raiders · Trends29
Tom Cable is back. Is that a good thing? Who knows? If they don't fix the quarterback position, does it matter?
Lions31Lions · Trends31
It's all about improving the defense. They need pass-rush help in the worst way. They are another year away from competing -- at least.
Rams32Rams · Trends32
They have a huge decision at the top of the draft: Do they take a quarterback or do they solve that by acquiring Michael Vick? We'll see.

Ok, I am a HUGE Colts fan (cant you tell by my avatar???). But I have to disagree with Prisco here. There is no way that the Colts should have the top spot after the last two games. Sure, they were wins, but the colts did not play well at all.

I think Saints should be firs

1. Saint's- This team is for real. Not only is the offense top tier and not just the pass game. But there deffense knows when to lock down and not fold and they can make game changing plays.

2.Vikings- What happens when you and Brett Favre to a solid deffense and an offense full of play makers including the best RB

First, The 'Aints should be #1. They have shone much more heat AND are gonna dominate the rest of their schedule. The Colts are gonna lose this week to the Belichecks. And , as a Raider fan, on the Mangeniuses are really worse than us. And even  Cleveland will fire Mangini after the season. Until Al Davis dies, Black N Silver fans are ...(more)

Forget all the times Prisco has been a douche and played favorites.  He gets one prediction right with the Bengals and writes a whole column on how everyone is saying, "Wow, you picked the Bengals at the beginning of the year to make the playoffs?  You are SOOOOO GREAT!!!!!"  Prisco needs to get his head out of his self-right ...(more)

....that Petey boy is still on the Bungals bandwagon. He thinks they were "validated" by beating a shadow of a once dominant Ravens team? Be honest, we all know this isn't the Raven's team we all grew to hate. It took somewhat of a miracle for the Bungals to beat the Steeler ...(more)

1.  Saints-- They've won games by passing, running, and playing solid defense.  That means no matter what the situation, they can never be counted out of a game.  They have an easy few weeks before a huge test against the Patriots--then we'll really know for sure exactly ...(more)

Before I start my rankings I'd like to add that I had the hardest time ranking teams 16-25. The Bears get smoked at home by the Cards. Green Bay loses to a previously winless (and seemingly hopeless) Tampa team. San Francisco loses to Tennesse....what a mess. I ended up moving teams up who lost games. As I have done all along I tried m ...(more)

These three teams must be the most disappointing thus far into the season. Packers D stinks, their O Line stinks, Jennings is having a very disappointing season, and Rodgers holds onto the ball way too long.  The Bears D is absolutely flatlining, Forte is having a massively disappointing season, and their own O Line is weak.& ...(more)

Pricso just can't resist a chance to take a cheapshot on Brett Favre.

Since when is it cool to question whether a player is really suffering an injury? They should fire you on the spot. (please? pretty please?) You can just sense the bitterness that this guy types with whenever he has to write (and I use that term loosely) about Favre. I guess I should give him credit fo

I mean does anybody care what this guy has to say?  I'm happy that nobody cares about the Steelers.  Let's be real here, Pittsburgh beats Chicago except 2 missed field goals and a dropped TD pass.  Pitt also beats Cincy but Limas Sweed dropped a late TD, and ...(more)

After the Bengals lost to Denver he back pedaled so fast you would have thought he was Usain Bolt.  It wasn't that's one game, they'll recover it was OMG what was I thinking, picking the Bengals for the playoffs? I just watched Prisco's video Power Rankings, where he discussed the Bengals/Steelers matchup next Sunday. Of course, his column really talks up the Bengals, and he talks them up in the video too, noting how they catch a break with Pittsburgh coming off a road game and a short week. Still, he just can't bring himself to pick against the ...(more)

I'm sorry but did he say that if the Steelers don't win this week against the Bengals that they will "risk going the wild card route." I see no problem in that, considering that THEY WON THE SUPER BOWL as a wild card 2006. They won 3 straight playoff games on the road too and I reall ...(more)
