Mangini, Quinn to LeBron: Come on down; Rogers says no way

BEREA, Ohio -- If LeBron James truly believes he can help the Cleveland Browns, coach Eric Mangini has an orange helmet waiting for him.

"I think he should come on down," Mangini said, smiling. "I know he's pretty busy right now, but if he wants to give it a shot, the guy is gifted. He's competitive and tough. I'm sure whatever he applied himself to, he'd probably be good in baseball or soccer or swimming."

The NBA superstar, who was an All-State wide receiver in high school, said Tuesday night that if he put the time and commitment into it, he could be a good football player. Mangini agreed, calling James "a freak athletically" and said the 6-8, 260-pounder could be dangerous at tight end, wide receiver or even outside linebacker.

When the gist of Mangini's comments was relayed to James, he smiled -- but didn't take the bait.

"I had what I had to say, and that was it," James said before his Cavaliers played at the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Quarterback Brady Quinn also heard about James' football fetish. He would love to have a target to throw to like James in the red zone.

"That'd be great," Quinn said. "Tell him to suit up and let us know, we'll get him working. Obviously he's an incredibly talented athlete. If he wants to try to play a little bit now, we'd be more than willing to pick him up."

Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers isn't convinced James, as great as he is, could step into the NFL and be able to handle the pounding.

"I heard that comment," Rogers said. "I have mixed emotions about that. A great athlete? Yes. A football player? No."

Rogers then looked into TV cameras.

"Yeah LeBron, I said it," he said. "It's a punishing game. I just don't think you can step off the basketball court after not going through this year in and year out and just play football. From that standpoint, I just don't think it's possible. You have to weather and condition your body to take this punishment."

So what if James had a year to train? Could he do it then?

"Yeah, he might make a heck of a tight end," Rogers said. "I'd like to see him out there running down the seam."

LeBron knows his history, and must realize that he would not last nearly as long in football as in basketball.  Bo Jackson might have had a long baseball career if he had avoided football (although as a Raiders fan, I can't believe I'm even saying it).  LeBron also very likely watched Micahel Jordan waste good years of his career ...(more)

6'8", 260 - enough said. It is never going to happen, but Lebron James could be a star in the NFL any day. He is a physical monster. He is strong and fast. He would be a star in the NFL. It is never going to happen, but it would be much easier for an NBA player to go to the NFL than the other way around, I think Lebron could figure out how to run a route. Much easier than having the skill to shoot ...(more)

I dont see how he'd do it unless he quits the NBA. Sure it would be interesting to see if he could be a TE maybe, he certainly has the size. Should he do it? I'd say no. Imagine if MJ wasted his basketball talent playing in minor league baseball or golf. He should stick to what he's really good at and that is basketball. I wonder if he's getting bored w/ basketball though??

Some dumbbunny mentioned the MJ comparison in baseball, MJ took 20 years off of baseball and LeBron was playing football in Ohio as recently as 2002. The proper comparison is Antonio Gates who played HS football just like LeBron, Took 4 years off compared to LeBrons 6 right now and is an inferior athlete to LeBr ...(more)

The NFL and NBA season go on at the same time so this is a non-issue. Also, the most he could get paid in the NFL is around 10 mill a year and he will get double that his next NBA contract if he wants it. That said he would be a first round pick at TE if he went in because his size, athleticism and speed are ridiculous and everyone knows he has the competitive edge to mix it up. The only variable ...(more)

Dear NFL please take football out of the lousy city of Cleveland once and for all so no one has to see the worst roster in professional sports stink it up.  Goa head and crown LeBron the best basketball & football player in Clevend, Knicks fans will appreciate that when they take him next year.

All football players get hurt.  LeBron has a huge payday waiting for him somewhere next year, and all he has to do is not get hurt.  He shouldn't even cross a street outside a crosswalk (especially in FL) due to the risk of letting that money slip away.

James would be a good coach. I am making this statement based only on the fact that James can do no wrong and Mangini does not have a clue on how to lead a football team. Besides, the Browns players will respect James...after all he is "Mr. Cleveland" and Mangini is a clueless pain in the .....

I know this is not worth wasting effort considering as an actual possibility, but as a bit of fantasy, it's a fun idea to imagine.

I'm not that sure that Lebron could be a great receiver because that involves route running at the NFL level.  And of course blocking takes some practice.  So, give him a couple years and he might be able to do it.  I do, however, think that o

At this point in the season, based on the state of the Browns, I say why not?  LeBron James would at least bring some interest and hope into watching this team.  It was clear in the offseason and the beginning of this season that the organization was not even trying to be competitive this year.  They got rid of their two best ...(more)

This is what sports have come to, there needs to be a discussion about something ALL THE TIME! If you are going to talk about the Browns, how about talk about how bad of an organization they are and how Mangini is so bad that he would take any Athlete with size because he has taken a team that could be a .500 team or even in the playoff pic ...(more)

LeBron threw the Browns a publicity soft pitch and they hit it! A better performance in the media than anything they've done on the field! LeBron would have to be a MORON to potentially injure himself playing football and shorten his lucrative BBL career! It will NEVER happen.

I hate to deflate Mangooni as he builds his fantasy team but where would he play James?  QB nobody can survive being a QB for the Browns with that blocking.  Also as QB who are you going to throw to, oh yeah the second round draft pick Robiske he has, has he caught a pass?  How about RB, again th ...(more)

You can't be serious. The Browns are the worst team in football with nothing to look forward to and this is what Mangini chooses to address? This was a joke to begin with when James said this. Please Mangini why don't you the next time a reporter asks you about this say "no comment" and addres FOOTBALL issues. I am from the Cleveland area, ...(more)

So the obvious comparison here is Michael Jordan trying to play minor league baseball. We all know how that went for MJ. I will say that a guy Lebrons  has the frame to play NFL football, but I dont think he'd have the strength or speed needed to play NFL football at this time. With 2-3 years of training/practice/coaching and a will to learn, sure he could possibly make a squad.
