Panthers receiver Smith active; Jets without two CBs

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith is active for the team's game against the New York Jets after being questionable with sore ribs.

Smith was added to the Panthers' injury list Saturday, but it was unclear when he was injured.

Panthers reserve defensive end Charles Johnson didn't make the trip and is missing his second straight game with a strained chest muscle.

The Jets are down a few cornerbacks as Dwight Lowery (high ankle sprain) and Donald Strickland (concussion) are not active. Backup cornerback-kick returner Justin Miller was waived Saturday after reportedly missing a team meeting earlier in the day. Miller could be replaced on kickoffs by David Clowney or Brad Smith.
