News briefs: Steelers sign veteran Galloway to replace Sweed

PITTSBURGH -- Wide receiver Joey Galloway has been added to the Pittsburgh Steelers' roster as the replacement for Limas Sweed.

Sweed was placed on injured reserve Monday with a non-football related illness. Coach Mike Tomlin would not reveal any details of Sweed's condition Tuesday.

"I think it's appropriate right now that we say very little in regard to his personal issues," Tomlin said. "He has our full support. Anything else I say will be in regards to protecting his privacy."

Galloway was cut by New England earlier this season after catching seven passes for 67 yards. The former Ohio State receiver has 689 catches for a 15.6 average during an NFL career that began in 1995, but he hasn't had a TD catch since making six for Tampa Bay in 2007.

Pittsburgh was interested in signing Galloway during the offseason, but he chose New England instead. Galloway, 38, grew up in Bellaire, Ohio, which is 60 miles from Pittsburgh.

The Steelers also signed long snapper Jared Retkofsky to replace Greg Warren, who injured a right knee ligament on the final play of Pittsburgh's win over Green Bay. Retkofsky was the Steelers' long snapper for the final two months and the playoffs last season after Warren tore a knee ligament.

Chargers put center Mruczkowski on IR, sign Ghiacuic

SAN DIEGO -- Center Scott Mruczkowski was placed on injured reserve by the San Diego Chargers, meaning his season is over.

Mruczkowski injured his right ankle during the game-winning drive in Sunday's 27-24 victory against Cincinnati. Mruczkowski started the last 13 games at center after Nick Hardwick hurt an ankle in the season opener at Oakland, requiring surgery.

Hardwick might return in Friday night's game at Tennessee.

"He took a pretty good number of reps today and we'll see how he feels tomorrow," coach Norv Turner said.

To replace Mruczkowski on the active roster, the Chargers signed Eric Ghiacuic. He started 42 of 48 games at center from 2005-08 with Cincinnati. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an unrestricted free agent in 2009 and was released after training camp.

Veteran long-snapper again signed by Seahawks

RENTON, Wash. -- For the third time in three seasons, Seattle has brought in Jeff Robinson to be the Seahawks' long-snapper.

Robinson was signed on Tuesday to replace Kevin Houser.

Houser was placed on injured reserve after suffering a collapsed lung following the Seahawks 24-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Houser went to the hospital following the game and a team spokesman said that he was still in the hospital as of Tuesday afternoon.

"I feel bad for Kevin and that's a serious deal," Robinson said. "Obviously the situation with the team isn't super great either so I'm just happy to fill in and glad the organization had me back."

Robinson has been working with his wife's health-and-wellness business and caring for their 2-year old daughter May Louise when the Seahawks came calling once again.

"The thing that's good about Jeff is that I know him well having coached him before," special team coach Bruce DeHaven said. "You know probably what you're going to get unless he's gone to pieces in a year, which he hasn't. He came out here and snapped very good today."

Houser had played well for the Seahawks before Sunday's injury. He was hurt covering a punt against the Buccaneers during the second quarter.

Cardinals release two, sign two

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals released linebacker Ali Highsmith and fullback Brandon Renkart on Tuesday and signed safety Hamza Abdullah and tackle Cliff Louis.

Highsmith had 13 tackles in 14 games this season, while Renkart has been on Arizona's practice squad all year.

Abdullah is a five-year NFL veteran who played in 23 games for the Denver Broncos from 2006 to 2008. He was released by Cleveland on Sept. 5 as one of the final preseason cuts.

Louis was put on the Cardinals' practice squad. He has been on the practice squads of the Browns (2007), Jacksonville Jaguars (2007) and New York Giants (2008) and was released by the Giants on Sept. 5 after the preseason.
