49ers' Coffee offers religious reason for retiring

San Francisco 49ers second-year running back Glen Coffee offered a reason for retiring abruptly from the NFL, in particular, a religious reason.

"I've already told Christ it's time for me to go," Coffey told the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows in this interview.

Coffee allowed that there was an ongoing push from his family and teammates to get him to return to the team.

But Coffee, who left Alabama after his junior year for the NFL, said he is going to return to school to complete his degree in consumer affairs.

Coffee had only 226 yards rushing last season but was expected to provide some relief for 49ers star Frank Gore this season.
