Reports: Texans among leaders to pick up Leinart

  •

The Houston Texans have emerged as a leader for the services of free-agent quarterback Matt Leinart.

Leinart, released by the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday, would join Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky on the roster, should the Texans pick him up.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Houston is among the leaders for Leinart, the No. 10 overall pick in the NFL Draft who failed to live up to expectations in Arizona.

The Chronicle reported that the Texans didn't re-sign quarterback John David Booty to the regular roster or sign him to the practice squad Sunday. But they have a roster spot open and one spot available on the practice squad.

Leinart, who was expected to earn the starting nod heading into training camp, was beaten out by former Browns quarterback Derek Anderson.

The Cardinals also decided to keep rookies Max Hall and John Skelton on the roster ahead of Leinart. Hall, a former BYU standout, will be Anderson's backup.

The Seattle Seahawks, coached by Leinart's former college USC mentor, Pete Carroll, has surfaced in reports, but Clark Judge of CBSSports.com reports that the Seahawks are not a possibility for the former Heisman Trophy winner.

According to Internet reports, other clubs also interested in Leinart are Oakland, Cincinnati and Jacksonville.
