Defensive end Aaron Smith has been placed on injured reserve for the third consecutive season and fourth time in the past five years.
Smith had already missed two games with a foot injury, with Ziggy Hood starting in his place.
Smith, 35, has played in just 15 games over the past three seasons and his future with the Steelers is uncertain as the defense continues to show signs of aging at key positions.
