Muir changes his mind and retires
--Bill Muir retired after first saying he planned to coach the 2012 season with the Chiefs. Muir was the team's offensive coordinator/offensive line coach, but he'd been told he would no longer be coordinator. The team wanted him to stay and handle the offensive line. Muir said yes, but then changed his mind, deciding to end a coaching career that began in 1965 at his alma mater Susquehanna College. "I have had a change of heart," said Muir. "I am retiring from the Chiefs. My intentions when I spoke (at the Senior Bowl) was to continue to coach. For personal reasons, I've changed my mind."
--Head coach Romeo Crennel has spots to fill on his coaching staff. With Brian Daboll on board as offensive coordinator, Crennel is still looking for an offensive line coach, o-line assistant and a wide receivers coach. He may also be looking for a quarterbacks coach because Jim Zorn was considering his options after not getting the offensive coordinator's position. Along with Daboll, the only other addition to the coaching staff was special teams coach Tom McMahon replacing Steve Hoffman, who moved on to the Oakland Raiders.
--Losing director of college scouting Phil Emery will hurt the Chiefs' personnel effort. General manager Scott Pioli says he'll look at various options and avenues when it comes to filling the position. "We have a staff in place," Pioli said. "People are going to pick up additional responsibilities as we go through this cycle. Making a change now, the timing would be terrible. What we've tried to do in coaching and scouting is we want to reward people by promoting from within. Those people have to be ready, but that's the great reward you offer to these people."
--Team officials haven't had much to say publicly about the in-depth Kansas City Star story about problems within the Chiefs organization under Pioli and team president Mark Donovan. At the Super Bowl, Pioli was asked on Radio Row about the story that included details of abusive behavior and the alleged bugging of offices. "You ask two different people and you get two different stories," Pioli said. "I know what we do have there are a lot of employees who are very, very happy, very energetic, enjoy what they are doing, and they love accountability, they love being held to a certain standard. I see it as a place where there are a lot of people who are very happy to work there and love the ownership." When asked specifically about former head coach Todd Haley's claims that he thought his cell phone had been tampered with and offices were bugged, Pioli said: "Yeah, I heard that, or I read that. Clark Hunt and Mark Donovan said at the time and I'll say it again, unequivocally, completely, totally untrue."
QUOTE TO NOTE
"I'm going to depend on him to handle the offensive side of the ball. But with that being said, because of our relationship we are going to sit down and say this is how we need to attack an opponent, this is what we need to do in the game plan and then I expect Brian to implement those things." -- Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel on new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
