Steelers restructure Woodley and Timmons contracts

  •

The Pittsburgh Steelers are making the necessary moves to get under the salary cap for the 2012 season, and it starts in the linebacker corps.

LaMarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons have restructured their contracts to help the team make a dent in the estimated $25 million they need to cut to get under the salary cap for 2012. According to a report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Woodley's take-home pay will not drop, but the $5.5 million roster bonus that he was supposed to receive in March will be paid as a signing bonus, along with $2.7 million of his $3.4 million salary from last season. New cap numbers for Timmons have not been made available.

Timmons just finished his fifth year with the Steelers, who drafted him out of Florida State in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He was second on the team with 93 tackles in 2011, including two sacks. He also forced two fumbles and intercepted a pass.

Woodley, the Steelers' second-round pick out of Michigan in 2007, tied James Harrison for the team lead with nine sacks in 2011, despite playing in just 10 games. He suffered a hamstring injury in the team's Week 8 win over the Patriots and did not play again until December 4 against the Bengals.

The moves game as team director of business administration Omar Khan was targeted by the Rams as a potential GM candidate. Khan has a strong reputation around the NFL as a "capologist."
