Strategy And Personnel

The Sports Xchange

Safety: The Jets may look to move on from UFA Jim Leonhard, who has suffered two devastating leg injuries since December 2010. The Jets have been getting torched by opposing tight ends in recent seasons, and need to get younger and faster at this position. The biggest name on the free-agent board at this position is Washington's LaRon Landry, but another option could be Oakland's Tyvon Branch, who played in the defense of Rex Ryan's twin brother, Rob, in 2008 as a rookie.

Wide receiver: The Jets need a veteran receiver who is quarterback-friendly and won't clash with Mark Sanchez the way Santonio Holmes has. The Jets are stuck with Holmes, owed $15.25 in guaranteed money, so he and Sanchez must work things out. But the Jets need someone who can stretch defenses. UFA Braylon Edwards did that for them in 2009-10 and had a rapport with Sanchez, but would the Jets admit a mistake by re-signing him?

Outside linebacker: The Jets still lack that consistent edge rusher who forces opponents to adjust their game plans. Yes, RFA Aaron Maybin resurrected his career with six sacks in 2011, but he isn't yet consistent enough to carry the load. Possibilities could include UFA Anthony Spencer of Dallas or Alabama's Courtney Upshaw, projected as a first-round pick.
