TEAM NEEDS

1. Pass rusher: Everyone is searching for one of these, as coach Rex Ryan discussed at the Combine. The Jets have a particular need for such a player after Aaron Maybin led the team with six sacks in a situational role while the aging Calvin Pace and Bart Scott had 4.5 sacks apiece.

2. Wide receiver: The Jets need another reliable receiver to keep opposing defenses honest. Santonio Holmes disappointed in the first year of a long-term deal and Plaxico Burress probably won't be back. The last player drafted by the Jets to surpass 1,000 yards was Jerricho Cotchery in 2007.

3. Safety: Few teams can match the Jets' cornerback duo of Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie, but the Jets will need to draft or develop a starter after safety Jim Leonhard suffered a season-ending leg injury for the second straight year.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--QB Mark Brunell, 41, is expected to retire after 18 years in the NFL. The Jets will likely scour the free-agent market for competition for starter Mark Sanchez.

--WR Plaxico Burress had eight touchdown catches in his first NFL action in two-plus years last year but often complained about his role and almost certainly won't be back. He has already said he'd like to play for the Eagles.

--S Jim Leonhard is one of the Jets' leaders, but he had a second straight season shortened by injury -- this one a torn right patella tendon -- and his play was beginning to slip at age 29. If he's back, it'll be on a low-risk deal.

--QB Kevin O'Connell has been released twice by the Jets without ever throwing a pass for the green-and-white. He'll just be a camp body and no threat to Mark Sanchez if he returns.

--CB Donald Strickland had 15 special teams tackles in his second go-around with the Jets but will be slotted for backup duty if he returns.

--RB LaDainian Tomlinson said shortly after the season he was contemplating retirement. If he does return, it won't be with the Jets, who will look to get younger behind Shonn Greene.

RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--LB Aaron Maybin (tendered at $1.26M with first-round pick as compensation) began the climb back from "Bustville" last year, when the former first-round pick of the Bills had a team-high six sacks in just 13 games as a pass-rush specialist. That's six more sacks than he had in two years with the Bills, so while the Jets won't break the bank for him, they'll be more than happy to bring Maybin back on a team-friendly deal to see if the turnaround is for real.
